Frequently Asked Questions
ICS 25.140 is a classification code in the International Classification for Standards (ICS) system. It covers "Hand-held tools". The ICS is a hierarchical classification system used to organize international, regional, and national standards, facilitating the search and identification of standards across different fields.
There are 1355 standards classified under ICS 25.140 (Hand-held tools). These standards are published by international and regional standardization bodies including ISO, IEC, CEN, CENELEC, and ETSI.
The International Classification for Standards (ICS) is a hierarchical classification system maintained by ISO to organize standards and related documents. It uses a three-level structure with field (2 digits), group (3 digits), and sub-group (2 digits) codes. The ICS helps users find standards by subject area and enables statistical analysis of standards development activities.

This document specifies a laboratory performance test method for hydraulic impulse and electric impulsing tools for installing threaded fasteners in a laboratory environment, and for power assembly tools (referred throughout the document as “tools”) for installing threaded fasteners. It gives instructions on the procedure, performance parameters to test and how to evaluate and present the test data. It also provides a method for the measurement of torque repeatability (scatter) over a range of torque rates as specified in this document, and over a range of torque adjustment as defined by the manufacturer. It gives instructions on equipment parameters, what to test for and how to evaluate and present the test data. It is applicable to tools of any power source, such as pneumatic or electric, including battery-powered, which apply torque in discontinuous increments, and within the torque range 0,5 N·m to 800 N·m. Outside this range, it is acceptable to modify the test method providing that the modification is documented in the test report. It is not applicable to impact wrenches, and ratchet wrenches or wrenches with ratcheting clutches. The relationship between torque measurements and clamp force-based tests is commented on in Annex A. The use of tools using discontinuous operation of the motor to provide torque impulses is discussed in Annex B. It requires manufacturers to perform tests over their defined torque range of the tool; however, it allows users to perform single point tests in order to minimize the number of test joints necessary for a wide range of test torque levels. A list of preferred test torque levels is provided in Annex C.

IEC 62841-4-9:2026 applies to rechargeable battery-powered motor-operated chain saws for tree service, hereinafter referred to as chain saws or machines, having a maximum mass of 5,0 kg. The mass includes the heaviest detachable battery pack(s), if any, as described in IEC 62841-1:2014, K.8.14.2 e) 2), but excludes the guide bar, saw chain and saw chain lubricant. Chain saws covered by this document are intended to be used for pruning and dismantling standing tree crowns.
The chain saws covered by this document are designed only to be operated with the right hand on the rear handle and the left hand on the front handle.
This document does not apply to
– chain saws supplied by mains power or power from non-isolated sources that permit the machine to be used while connected to such power supplies; or
– chain saws supplied by integral batteries; or
– chain saws for cutting wood as covered by IEC 62841-4-1; or
– chain saws designed for use in conjunction with a guide-plate and riving knife or in any other way such as with a support or as a stationary or transportable machine; or
– pole-mounted pruners; or
NOTE 1 Pole-mounted pruners are covered by IEC 62841-4-10.
– pruning saws.
NOTE 2 Pruning saws will be covered by a future part of IEC 62841-4.
The maximum rated voltage for machines and battery packs is 75 V d.c.
Battery machines covered by this document are not considered to be class I tools, class II tools or class III tools and therefore are not required to have basic insulation, supplementary insulation or reinforced insulation. Electric shock hazard is considered to exist only between parts of opposite polarity.
This document deals with the hazards presented by machines which are encountered by all persons in the normal use and reasonably foreseeable misuse of the machines.
When evaluating a rechargeable battery pack for protection against electric shock during charging, creepage distances, clearances and distances through insulation, the relevant requirements of this document are applicable with the battery pack fitted to the intended charger.
Since rechargeable battery packs for machines are submitted to different use patterns (such as rough use, high charging and discharging currents), their safety can be evaluated only by this document and not by using other standards for rechargeable battery packs, such as IEC 62133-1:2017 or IEC 62133-2:2017, unless otherwise indicated in this document. All relevant aspects related to the safety of rechargeable batteries are addressed in this document, such that the requirements of IEC 62133-1:2017 or IEC 62133-2:2017 are not required to be separately applied.
When evaluating the risk of fire associated with rechargeable battery packs for machines, consideration has been given to the fact that these battery packs are unattended energy sources and have been evaluated as such in this document. Requirements in other standards regarding the risk of fire due to the charging of these battery packs are therefore considered to be fulfilled.
This document also addresses requirements covering the use of lithium-ion cells employed in battery systems in machines. The following is considered within the context of these requirements:
– These requirements address the risk of fire or explosion of these batteries and not any possible hazards associated with toxicity nor potential hazards associated with transportation or disposal.
NOTE 3 IEC 62281:2019 covers the safety aspects of lithium-ion batteries during transport.
– Battery systems covered by these requirements are not intended to be serviced by the end user.
– These requirements are intended to provide comprehensive evaluation of a battery only if used in products covered by this document.
– These requirements address the safety of lithium-ion battery systems during storage and use including discharge and charge. These requirements are only considered to be supplementary requirements in regard to battery charger fire and e

This document covers safety requirements for powder actuated fixing and hard marking tools which operate with an intermediate member (piston) and are handled manually.
This document deals with all significant hazards (see Annex I), hazardous situations and events relevant to powder actuated fixing and hard marking tools, when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable (see Clause 4). It deals with the significant hazards in the different operating modes and intervention procedures as referred to in EN ISO 12100:2010, 5.4, 5.5, 5.6.
Although the safe use of powder actuated tools depends to an important extent on the use of appropriate cartridges and fasteners, this document is not formulating requirements for the cartridges and fasteners to be used with the tools (see Clause 6).
This document applies to tools designed for use with cartridges with casings made of metal or plastic and with solid propellant and containing a minor quantity of primer mix with a composition different from that of the main propellant.
This document applies to tools designed for use with single cartridges or with cartridges collated in disks or in strips.
The fixing tools in the scope are those intended for use with fasteners made from metal.
NOTE Information about cartridges can be found either in EN 16264:2014 or the publication of the Permanent International Commission for the Proof of Small Arms (C.I.P.).
This document is not applicable to powder actuated fixing and hard marking tools which are manufactured before this document’s date of publication.
