Overview

EN IEC 62841-2-18:2026/A11:2026 specifies the safety requirements and common modifications for electric motor-operated hand-held strapping tools. As an amendment to the European Standard EN IEC 62841-2-18, this document ensures enhanced safety, performance, and compliance for these power tools within industrial, commercial, and garden maintenance settings. Developed by CLC/TC 116, the standard aligns with EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC, providing a framework for conformity assessment and the adoption of best practices in tool design, operation, and maintenance.

Key Topics

  • Safety Provisions for Hand-held Strapping Tools

    • Specialized requirements supplement general safety guidelines of EN 62841-1.
    • Focuses on noise and vibration emission measurements, operator protection, and mechanical hazard prevention.
  • Updates to Battery Tools and Power Management

    • Modifications address tools with integrated batteries, requiring:
      • Isolation devices to disconnect battery during maintenance.
      • Disabling devices to prevent accidental tool activation.
  • Test Methods

    • Defines consistent procedures for evaluating noise and vibration emissions through multi-cycle testing.
    • Procedures ensure tools meet prescribed decibel thresholds and safety limits.
  • Compliance with EU Legislation

    • The document supports manufacturers in meeting EU health and safety law, particularly Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
    • Annexes detail the correspondence between standard requirements and EU essential requirements.

Applications

Hand-held strapping tools are widely used in manufacturing, logistics, packaging, and gardening to securely strap packages, pallets, and bundles. EN IEC 62841-2-18:2026/A11:2026 helps:

  • Manufacturers design and produce compliant and safer electric strapping tools for end users.
  • Distributors and importers ensure the products meet current European conformity and safety legislation.
  • Employers and safety officers verify tool compliance, reducing the risk of workplace accidents and facilitating easier tool servicing and maintenance.
  • Test laboratories and certification bodies assess conformity using standardized measurement techniques for emissions and mechanical safeguards.

Related Standards

EN IEC 62841-2-18:2026/A11:2026 is implemented alongside related standards such as:

  • EN 62841-1:2015: General safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery.
  • EN IEC 62841-2 series: Specific requirements for different tool categories.
  • EN ISO 12100: General principles for machinery safety design and risk assessment.
  • EU Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC: Essential health and safety requirements for machinery placed on the EU market.

This amendment ensures alignment between the detailed safety requirements for hand-held strapping tools and the broader regulatory framework applicable across the European Union.
