Overview

SIST EN IEC 62841-2-19:2026 specifies the particular safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held jointers, as used for cutting into wood or similar materials such as chipboard, fibreboard, and plywood. Developed by the CLC (European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization) in conjunction with the IEC, this standard complements IEC 62841-1:2014 by adapting general safety requirements to address the distinctive design and operation of portable jointers.

This European standard supersedes EN 60745-2-19:2009 and all its amendments, streamlining safety requirements and aligning them with current electrotechnical best practices. It establishes a harmonized framework for safety, marking, construction, and performance testing of hand-held jointers across European and international markets.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Definitions: Applies to hand-held jointers equipped with disc cutters for use on wood or wood-like materials.
  • Marking and Instructions: Requires comprehensive and indelible markings, such as direction of rotation, no-load spindle speed, and recommended disc cutter diameter. Safety warnings specific to jointers are mandated.
  • Mechanical Safety: Prescribes requirements for protective guards, handles, and disc cutter replacement, emphasizing secure operation and protection against accidental contact.
  • Dust Management: Recognizes jointers as tools that produce considerable dust. Provides requirements for dust collection systems and user instructions about dust hazards and respiratory protection.
  • Mechanical and Electrical Testing: Defines conditions for performance and endurance testing, including drop tests for guard integrity and vibration/noise measurements during operation.
  • Battery Tool Provisions: Includes annexes specifying isolation and disabling devices for battery-operated jointers, ensuring maintenance safety and prevention of accidental startup.

Applications

Hand-held jointers are widely used in carpentry, woodworking, joinery, and furniture making for precisely cutting slots or grooves in workpieces. The standard delivers practical value in several areas:

  • Tool Manufacturers: Offers clear guidance for design, marking, assembly, and testing to achieve market conformity and support CE marking for European distribution.
  • Testing Laboratories: Establishes uniform procedures for the evaluation of mechanical strength, electrical safety, noise, and vibration, supporting compliance assessment.
  • Professional Users and Employers: Ensures end products are built and labeled to reduce the risk of operator injury, especially regarding guarding systems, disc cutter selection, and safe tool operation.
  • Maintenance Providers: Details requirements for safe servicing, particularly for battery-powered models, to mitigate hazards during inspection or parts replacement.

Adherence to SIST EN IEC 62841-2-19:2026 ensures a consistent safety baseline for all electric motor-operated hand-held jointers, supporting both workplace safety and regulatory compliance in the woodworking sector.

Related Standards

  • IEC 62841-1:2014: General requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. SIST EN IEC 62841-2-19:2026 must be used together with this foundational standard.
  • EN 847-1:2017: Safety requirements for milling tools and circular saw blades, referenced specifically for disc cutters supplied with jointers.
  • Previous Edition: EN 60745-2-19:2009, now replaced, formerly governed safety for similar tools.
  • Related Product Standards: Other standards within the IEC 62841 series address various categories of power tools and support harmonization across the industry.

Part 2-19: Particular requirements for hand-held jointers

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
Publications.
8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
9) IEC draws attention to the possibility that the implementation of this document may involve the use of (a)
patent(s). IEC takes no position concerning the evidence, validity or applicability of any claimed patent rights in
respect thereof. As of the date of publication of this document, IEC had not received notice of (a) patent(s), which
may be required to implement this document. However, implementers are cautioned that this may not represent
the latest information, which may be obtained from the patent database available at https://patents.iec.ch. IEC
shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
IEC 62841-2-19 has been prepared by IEC technical committee 116: Safety of motor-operated

convert it into the IEC Standard: Particular requirements for hand-held jointers.
Where a particular subclause of IEC 62841-1 is not mentioned in this document, that subclause
applies as far as reasonable. Where this document states "addition", "modification" or
"replacement", the relevant text in IEC 62841-1 is to be adapted accordingly.
The following print types are used:
– requirements: in roman type;
– test specifications: in italic type;
– terms defined in Clause 3: in bold type;
– notes: in small roman type.
