IEC 63458-1:2026 contains safety-related requirements for high pressure water jet units with drives of all kinds (e.g. electric motor, internal combustion engine, air and hydraulic) in which pumps are used to generate pressure. This document deals with all significant hazards, hazardous situations and events arising during assembly, erection, operation and servicing relevant to high pressure water jet units, when they are used as intended and under conditions of misuse which are reasonably foreseeable by the manufacturer. All references to high pressure water jet units within this document include machines for one or more of the following industrial applications:
– cleaning;
– surface preparation;
– material removal;
– readjustment of concrete;
– cutting.
This document applies to mobile and fixed high pressure water jet units, in which the water pressure is generated by a pressure generator/pump and in which the maximum allowable working pressure is more than the upper limit fixed in the scope of IEC 60335-2-79 (35 MPa is currently the upper limit for machines covered by IEC 60335-2-79).
This document does not cover:
– high pressure cleaners which are dealt with in IEC 60335-2-54;
– additional hazards due to the incorporation of high pressure water jet units into other process-technology machines;
– specific hazards associated with explosive atmospheres, use on ships or ambient temperatures outside the range 5 °C to 40 °C;
– hazard due to the nature of liquids used for jetting, other than that due to pressure;
– hazards associated with the drives or specific hazards due to any heat generation function. However, the hazards due to high temperatures of touchable surfaces are dealt with;
– high pressure water jet units which are manufactured before the date of its publication as IEC standard;
– high pressure water jet hoses which are covered by IEC 63458-2;
– high pressure water jet spraying device which are covered by IEC 63458-3;
Tests according to this document are type tests unless they relate to routine (informative) tests to be carried out during series manufacture.

Appliances not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless can be a source of danger to the public, such as appliances intended to be used by laymen in hotels, fitness centres and similar locations, are within the scope of this standard.
As far as is practicable, this standard deals with the common hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons in and around the home. However, in general, it does not take into account
- persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
- children playing with the appliance.
Attention is drawn to the fact that
- for appliances intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft, additional requirements can be necessary;
- in many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national water supply authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour and similar authorities;
- in many countries, mechanical strength, impact resistance and shattering properties of shower enclosures can be covered by national regulations.
If an appliance incorporates a part that is within the scope of IEC 60598 series or IEC 62368 series, the part is tested in accordance with the relevant standard as far as reasonable.
This standard does not apply to
- instantaneous water heaters used for showering (IEC 60335-2-35);
- shower-boost pumps (IEC 60335-2-41);
- appliances intended for medical purposes;
- appliances intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas).
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition published in 2016 and Amendment 1:2019. This edition constitutes a technical revision.
This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition:
a) alignment with IEC 60335-1:2020;
b) conversion of some notes to normative text (Clause 1);
c) updates to the surface temperature requirements (11.8, Table 101).
This part 2 is to be used in conjunction with the latest edition of IEC 60335-1 and its amendments unless that edition precludes it; in that case, the latest edition that does not preclude it is used. It was established on the basis of the sixth edition (2020) of that standard.

This standard deals with the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by appliances that are encountered by all persons. However, in general, it does not take into account:
- persons (including children) whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the appliance safely without supervision or instruction;
- children playing with the appliance.

IEC 60335-2-116:2025 deals with the safety of furniture with electrically motorized parts intended for household and similar purposes, their rated voltage being not more than 250 V including direct current (DC) supplied furniture and battery-operated furniture.
Furniture incorporating electrically motorized parts not intended for normal household use but which nevertheless can be a source of danger to the public, such as furniture intended to be used by laymen in shops, offices, hotels, restaurants, cinemas, hospitals, schools, in light industry and on farms, are within the scope of this standard.
Examples of furniture incorporating electrically motorized parts, are
– electrically operated/height adjustable tables and desks;
– electrically operated/adjustable stands and wall attachment for e.g.TV sets and monitors;
– electrically operated/adjustable seating;
– beds with incorporated ventilators and filters;
– electrically operated/adjustable beds;
– electrically operated/adjustable storage units including kitchen units;
– electrically operated/adjustable furniture intended to be secured to the wall or ceiling;
– electrically operated extension elements (drawers and doors);
– electric check-out furniture in hotels and shops;
– furniture delivered in parts (ready to assemble or knock-down furniture).
This standard deals with the reasonably foreseeable hazards presented by furniture incorporating electrically motorized parts that are encountered by all persons. However, in general, it does not take into account
– persons whose physical, sensory or mental capabilities; or lack of experience and knowledge prevents them from using the furniture incorporating electric appliances, parts or components safely without supervision or instruction;
– children playing with furniture incorporating electrically motorized parts.
Additional requirements can be necessary for furniture incorporating electrically motorized parts intended to be used in vehicles or on board ships or aircraft. In many countries, additional requirements are specified by the national health authorities, the national authorities responsible for the protection of labour, the national authorities for fire protection and similar authorities.
This standard does not apply to:
– furniture containing heating elements;
– furniture intended to be used in locations where special conditions prevail, such as the presence of a corrosive or explosive atmosphere (dust, vapour or gas);
– massage beds and massage chairs (IEC 60335-2-32);
– medical electrical equipment (IEC 60601 series);
– audio/video, information and communication technology equipment (IEC 62368-1);
– electrical wheel chairs;
– special furniture incorporating electric appliances, parts or components, which are part of industrial production equipment;
– electric child care articles except electrical height adjustable changing (nursing) tables;
– furniture especially for use by children;
– furniture for outdoor use.
Massage beds and massage chairs with motorized parts, other than those performing the massaging function, are also evaluated to the applicable requirements of this standard.

IEC 62115:2017 specifies safety requirements for electric toys that have at least one function dependant on electricity, electric toys being any product designed or intended, whether or not exclusively, for use in play by children under 14 years of age.
Examples of electric toys also within the scope of this standard are:
- constructional sets;
- experimental sets;
- functional electric toys (an electric toy that performs and is used in the same way as a product, appliance or installation intended for use by adults, and which may be a scale model of such product, appliance or installation);
- electric toy computers as well as a doll's house having an interior lamp.
If the packaging is intended to have play value then it is considered to be part of the electric toy.
This International Standard only covers the safety aspects of electric toys that relate to an electrical function.
This standard covers the safety of electric toys taking power from any source, such as batteries, transformers, solar cells and inductive connections.

It is the recommendation of the committee that the content of this publication be adopted for implementation nationally not earlier than 12 months or later than 36 months from the date of its publication.
