D20.24 - Plastic Building Products
Plastic Building Products
General Information
SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method is a standard procedure for determining windload resistance of rigid plastic siding under specified uniform static pressure difference. This typically is intended to represent the effects of wind loads on exterior building surfaces. The actual loading on building surfaces is quite complex, varying with wind direction, time, height above ground, building shape, terrain, surrounding structures, and other factors.
5.2 Design wind pressure is derived for specific geographical locations from wind velocity maps prepared by various agencies and found in references such as ASCE 7, the International Residential Code, International Building Code or other sources. For additional detailed information relating to the use of this test method for evaluation of wind load resistance, refer to Annex A1 of the standard specification appropriate for the type of polymeric siding.
Note 2: In applying the results of this test method, note that the performance of rigid PVC siding is a function of installation, and the specimen may or may not truly represent the actual application. In service, performance will also depend on the rigidity of supporting construction, and on the resistance of other components to deterioration by various causes, to thermal expansion and contraction, etc.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes methods for testing and evaluating windload resistance of rigid plastic siding when fastened in accordance with specific product standard specifications, or in accordance with the manufacturer’s installation instructions.
1.2 The proper use of this test method requires a knowledge of the principles of pressure measurement.
1.3 This test method describes the apparatus and the procedures to be used to determine an average maximum sustained static test pressure, or ultimate test pressure values, or both, with static pressure applied uniformly to a specimen.
Note 1: There is no known ISO equivalent to this test method.
1.4 The values expressed in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The SI equivalents in parentheses are for information only.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use. For specific precautionary statements, see Section 7.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Heat buildup in PVC exterior building products due to absorption of the energy from the sun may lead to distortion problems. Heat buildup is affected by the color, emittance, absorptance, and reflectance of a product. Generally, the darker the color of the product, the more energy is absorbed and the greater is the heat buildup. However, even with the same apparent color, the heat buildup may vary due to the specific pigment system involved. The greatest heat buildup generally occurs in the color black containing carbon black pigment. The black control sample used in this test method contains 2.5 parts of furnace black per 100 parts of PVC suspension resin. The maximum temperature rise above ambient temperature for this black is 90°F (50°C) for a 45° or horizontal surface when the sun is perpendicular to the surface and 74°F (41°C) for a vertical surface assuming that the measurements were done on a cloudless day with no wind and heavy insulation on the back of the specimen.4
5.2 This test method allows the measurement of the temperature rise under a specific type heat lamp, relative to that of a black reference surface, thus predicting the heat buildup due to the sun's energy.
5.3 The test method allows prediction of heat buildup of various colors or pigment systems, or both.
5.4 This test method gives a relative heat buildup compared to black under certain defined severe conditions but does not predict actual application temperatures of the product. These will also depend on air temperature, incident angle of the sun, clouds, wind velocity, insulation, installation behind glass, etc.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers prediction of the heat buildup in rigid and flexible PVC building products above ambient air temperature, relative to black, which occurs due to absorption of the sun's energy.
Note 1: This test method is expected to be applicable to all types of colored plastics. The responsible subcommittee intends to broaden the scope beyond PVC when data on other materials is submitted for review.
Note 2: There are no ISO standards covering the primary subject matter of this test method.
1.2 Rigid PVC exterior profile extrusions for assembled windows and doors are covered in Specification D4726.
1.3 Rigid PVC exterior profiles for fencing are covered in Specification F964.
1.4 Rigid PVC siding profiles are covered in Specification D3679.
1.5 Rigid PVC soffit profiles are covered in Specification D4477.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The impact strength of PVC profiles relates to suitability for service and to quality of processing. Impact tests are used for quality-control purposes and as an indication that products can withstand handling during assembling, installation, or in service.
5.2 Results obtained by use of this test method are used in two ways:
5.2.1 As the basis for establishing impact-test requirements in product standards, and
5.2.2 To measure the effect of changes in materials or processing.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers the determination of the energy required to crack or break rigid poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) profile under specified conditions of impact by means of a falling weight.
1.2 This test method is used either by itself or in conjunction with other methods for measuring PVC product toughness.
1.3 Because of the wide variety of profile sizes and shapes and the wide variety of manufacturing procedures and field abuse, this test method does not correlate universally with all types of abuse. Therefore, correlations must be established as needed.
1.4 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of this standard.
1.5 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard.

SCOPE
1.1 This specification establishes requirements and test methods for the color and appearance retention of solid and variegated colored plastic siding products.
1.2 Color retention testing provides a method for estimating the acceptability of color change in a plastic siding product over an extended period of service.
Note 1: The exposure locations and durations specified in this standard have been shown to provide a good estimation of the color change in vinyl and polypropylene siding products over an extended period of service (see 2.2). It is expected that materials designed for the exposure conditions typical of exterior siding will respond similarly, but the applicability of this standard to other types of plastic siding has not been empirically established.
1.3 This specification is a successor to Specifications D6864 and D7251, which cover solid colors and variegated colors, respectively. This specification combines coverage for both, and has the same scope as those standards.
1.4 Specifications D6864 and D7251 use Hunter Lab color space for measurement of colors and evaluation of color change. These standards require classification of colors into regions based on the L, a, and b coordinates of the color, and evaluation of color changes is done using an ellipsoid value equation having unique coefficients for each color region. This specification uses CIE 1976 L* a* b* color space for measurement and evaluation of color change. Using this method, the need for separate color regions and evaluation equations has been eliminated.
1.5 Provisions for sample selection and preparation, and weathering are the same in this specification as in Specifications D6864 and D7251.
1.6 Characterization of color and appearance for variegated colors is complicated by the presence of multiple colors in a random pattern. The procedure for measuring variegated colors in this specification is based on using a template to reference six spots for color measurement.
1.7 This standard specifies outdoor weathering in three specific climate zones for a single 24-month exposure, and the color retention performance requirements under these conditions are established to be indicative of acceptable performance over an extended period of service. However, nothing in this standard precludes the use of different or additional climate zones, or different exposure durations, so long as those conditions are clearly specified in any reports.
1.8 Units—The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.
1.9 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
Note 2: There is no known ISO equivalent to this standard.

1.5 The text of this standard references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in Tables and Figures) shall not be considered as requirements of this standard.
1.6 Fire properties are determined by using laboratory flammability tests (Test Methods D635, D1929, and E84).
1.6.1 This standard is used to measure and describe the response of materials, products, or assemblies to heat and flame under controlled conditions, but does not by itself incorporate all factors required for fire hazard or fire risk assessment of the materials, products or assemblies under actual fire conditions.
1.6.2 Fire testing is inherently hazardous. Adequate safeguards for personnel and property shall be employed in conducting these tests.
1.7 The following precautionary caveat pertains only to the test method portion, Section 8 of this specification. This specification does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this specification to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Heat buildup of polymeric building products due to absorption of energy from the sun may lead to distortion problems. Test Method Test Method D4803 was developed to predict a building product’s heat buildup (temperature rise). It compares the relative temperature changes of a pigmented PVC product and a PVC panel containing carbon black when exposed to an infrared heat lamp. Based on experimental results that determined the maximum temperature for this black panel under both solar exposure and in the laboratory test, a method for determining the exterior temperature rise and heat buildup for a test panel was developed. This test has shown to be useful and reliable but is time consuming and requires controlled conditions to minimize sources of variation.
5.2 This test method uses a spectrophotometer to measure a specimen’s reflectance in the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared region and uses the spectral power distribution of the heat lamp specified in Test Method D4803 to determine an intensity factor, which is an index of the relative spectral energy absorption by the specimen.
5.2.1 The temperature rise that would occur under an Test Method D4803 test is proportional to this intensity factor. An equation has been derived from the correlation of the intensity factor and temperature rise data obtained from Test Method D4803 testing of samples with a wide range of color and lightness. A total of 99 samples were studied and represent samples with the lowest to highest temperature rise. Linear regression analysis yields a R2 correlation coefficient of 0.98.
5.2.2 The procedure in Appendix X1 allows prediction of temperature rise that would result from testing of the same sample under Test Method D4803.
5.2.3 As this procedure is a correlation to results obtained by Test Method D4803, it is a method that yields a relative temperature rise compared to black under certain defined severe conditions, but does not predict actual field application tempera...
SCOPE
1.1 This test method uses reflectance spectra from the ultraviolet, visible, and near infrared region to produce an index of the temperature rise of polymeric siding above ambient temperature that occurs due to absorption of the sun’s energy.
1.2 The test method determines the intensity factor of a sample color. The intensity factor is a function of the sample’s reflectance spectra and the energy output of the heat lamp used in the test method Test Method D4803.
1.3 Appendix X1 provides a method for using the intensity factor to determine the maximum temperature rise of a sample under severe solar exposure.
1.3.1 A correlation between intensity factor and heat buildup (temperature rise) as predicted by Test Method D4803 exists.
1.3.2 The heat buildup (temperature rise) for a polymeric building product specimen is determined from its reflectance spectra and the correlation’s regression equation.
1.4 Units—The values stated in SI units are to be regarded as standard. No other units of measurement are included in this standard.
1.5 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 The impact strength values obtained on the flat sections of a building product profile are relevant only to the flat section that has been tested and these values do not necessarily indicate the impact resistance of the whole product, which is affected by the configuration of the profile (that is, corners, ribs, etc).
5.2 Constant weight and variable height, employed in these test methods, allow the velocity of impact to vary and, therefore, by Procedure B, can determine the energy of ductile-to-brittle transition, which cannot be determined if a variable weight is dropped from a constant height.
5.3 These test procedures have been found to be useful elements in rigid poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) building product characterization. Compound qualification, finished product quality control, environmental and weatherability research and development studies, and fabrication tolerance prediction constitute useful applications.
FIG. 2 Impact Tester
5.4 Choice of the specific impactor head configuration used is related to a variety of product attributes, such as specimen thickness and product toughness as well as abstract factors, such as the anticipated mode of failure in a specific application. The geometric uniqueness of the impactor head configurations prevents any comparison or correlation of testing results on samples tested with differing impactor head configurations. In general, the conical impactor, C.125, is useful to ensure failure of thicker specimens where the H.25 impactor caused no failure.
Note 2: Equivalent surface conditions are more likely to occur when specimens are prepared by compression molding or extrusion than by injection molding.
5.5 When comparing different samples tested with the same impactor head configuration, impact resistance shall be permitted to be normalized for average specimen thickness over a reasonably broad range (for example, 1 to 3 mm).3 However, this should only be done when the surface conditions listed in 6.1...

1.1 These test methods cover the determination of the energy required to crack or break rigid poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) plastic sheeting and profile flat sections used in building products, as well as extruded or molded test samples, under specified conditions of impact from a freefalling standard weight striking an impactor with either of two configurations in contact with the specimen.
1.2 Two test procedures are included:
1.2.1 Procedure A, used to determine minimum impact energy required to cause failure (hole, crack, split, shatter, or tear).
1.2.2 Procedure B, used to determine minimum impact energy required to cause brittle failure.
1.3 The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes methods for testing and evaluating windload resistance of rigid plastic siding when fastened in accordance with Practice D4756, specific product standard specifications, or in accordance with manufacturer’s installation instructions.

The maximum temperature rise above ambient temperature for this black is 90°F (50°C) for a 45° or horizontal surface when the sun is perpendicular to the surface and 74°F (41°C) for a vertical surface assuming that the measurements were done on a cloudless day with no wind and heavy insulation on the back of the specimen.3 See Appendix X1.

1.3 Rigid PVC exterior profiles for fencing are covered in Specification F964.
1.4 Rigid PVC siding profiles are covered in Specification D3679.
1.5 Rigid PVC soffit profiles are covered in Specification D4477.
1.6 Rigid PVC and Rigid CPVC plastic building products compounds are covered in Specification D4216.
1.7 The text of this test method references notes and footnotes which provide explanatory material. These notes and footnotes (excluding those in tables and figures) shall not be considered as requirements of this test method.
1.8 Units—The values stated in inch-pound units are to be regarded as the standard. The values given in parentheses are mathematical conversions to SI units that are provided for information only and are not considered standard.

5.5 When comparing different samples tested with the same impactor head configuration, impact resistance shall be permitted to be normalized for average specimen thickness over a reasonably broad range (for example, 1 to 3 mm).3 However, this should only be done when the surface conditions listed in 6.1 are essentially equiva...
SCOPE

It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety and health practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.

ABSTRACT
This specification covers flexible chlorinated polyethylene sheeting for use in concealed water-containment membranes in applications susceptible to costly secondary damage from leakage and which require very long term reliable performance, for example, fountains, pools, planters, shower and safe pans, and tile tubs. However, this specification does not cover water-containment membranes for use in applications involving exposure to ultraviolet light or direct sunlight. The sheeting shall be manufactured from a compound containing chlorinated polyethylene resin, with the resin being substantially amorphous and made from linear polyethylene. Recycled materials may be used, but must conform to the requirements specified, while the use of water-soluble materials shall be prohibited. Further, the sheeting shall be homogeneous, monolithic, and free of pinholes, particles of foreign matter, undispersed raw materials, blisters, coaters, pimples, pits, crazing, and thin spots, with the sheet edges being straight, parallel, and free of trim material. Tests for tensile strength, tensile stress at elongation, ultimate elongation, tear resistance, volatile loss, microorganism resistance, low-temperature flexibility, chemical resistance, hydrostatic pressure resistance, puncture resistance, bonded seam strength, thickness, pinholes, and shrinkage shall be performed and shall conform to the requirements specified.
