Solid biofuels - Sample preparation - Amendment 1 (ISO 14780:2017/Amd 1:2019)

The proposed international standard describes methods for reducing combined samples (or increments) to laboratory
samples - and laboratory samples to sub-samples and general analysis samples and is applicable to solid biofuels.
The methods described in this proposed document may be used for sample preparation, for example, when the
samples are to be tested for calorific value, moisture content, ash content, bulk density, durability, particle size
distribution, ash melting behaviour, chemical composition, and impurities. The methods are not intended to be
applied to the very large samples required for the testing of bridging properties.

Trdna biogoriva - Priprava vzorcev - Dopolnilo A1 (ISO 14780:2017/Amd 1:2019)

Overview

SIST EN ISO 14780:2017/A1:2019, titled “Solid biofuels - Sample preparation - Amendment 1,” is an important amendment to the established ISO 14780:2017 standard. Issued by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this document addresses the standardized preparation of samples for solid biofuels. Standardizing sample preparation ensures consistency, accuracy, and reliability in the analysis of solid biofuels, which is critical for quality control, market acceptance, and regulatory compliance in the energy sector.

This amendment guides the proper methodology for obtaining representative samples from solid biofuel batches, contributing to trustworthy test results that support fair trade, process optimization, and environmental reporting.

Key Topics

  • Sample Preparation Protocols: SIST EN ISO 14780:2017/A1:2019 provides updated procedures for the systematic preparation of solid biofuel samples. This includes clear flow sheets for handling and processing samples to achieve consistent laboratory practices across organizations.
  • Sub-sample Extraction Guidance: The amendment introduces an updated flow chart (Figure 5) describing the steps for sample preparation and emphasizing the optional extraction of sub-samples for specialized testing. This helps ensure that all critical fuel properties are accurately represented across tests.
  • Alignment with International Standards: The standard consolidates European and international requirements ensuring global harmonization in solid biofuel trading and analysis.
  • Multilingual Availability: The amendment is officially available in English, French, and German, broadening its accessibility throughout Europe and beyond.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 14780:2017/A1:2019 serves a wide array of practical applications in the renewable energy sector, particularly where solid biofuels such as wood pellets, briquettes, and agricultural byproducts are integral:

  • Quality Assurance in Laboratories: Reliable sample preparation is crucial for laboratories conducting testing on biofuel quality parameters like moisture content, calorific value, and ash content.
  • Biofuel Producers and Suppliers: Applicability in production sites ensures that shipments meet contractual specifications and regulatory thresholds, thereby facilitating smoother transactions and customer satisfaction.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Adhering to the sample preparation methods specified by this standard supports compliance with national and EU energy regulations, environmental standards, and sustainability commitments.
  • Academic and Industrial Research: Researchers use these protocols to obtain reproducible results, which are essential for innovation and development in biomass technologies.
  • Third-party Certification and Inspection: Provides an objective basis for sample handling during certification processes and inspections.

Related Standards

For comprehensive coverage of biofuel quality management and laboratory testing, the following standards are commonly used in conjunction with SIST EN ISO 14780:2017/A1:2019:

  • EN ISO 14780:2017: The base standard detailing general requirements and guidance for sample preparation of solid biofuels.
  • EN ISO 18135: Sampling of solid biofuels - methods for collecting, reducing, and handling samples from different sources.
  • EN ISO 17225 Series: Provides classification, specification, and quality assurance requirements for solid biofuels.
  • EN 15210-1 & EN 15210-2: Determination of mechanical durability of pellets and briquettes.
  • EN ISO 17828: Determination of bulk density for solid biofuels.

Utilizing SIST EN ISO 14780:2017/A1:2019 alongside these related standards ensures robust quality control, streamlined operations, and enhanced confidence in solid biofuels markets.
