Overview
SIST HD 60364-7-701:2025/A11:2025 is a critical European standard developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC) and managed by CLC. This document specifies requirements for low-voltage electrical installations in locations containing a bath or shower. The 2024 A11 amendment introduces vital common modifications, national deviations, and special national conditions, ensuring more precise safety, harmonization, and applicability across European countries.
This standard is part of the broader HD 60364 series, which governs the design, safety, and functionality of low-voltage electrical installations. Part 7-701 specifically targets “special installations or locations” where the proximity to water presents a heightened risk of electric shock, such as bathrooms and shower rooms.
Key Topics
SIST HD 60364-7-701:2025/A11:2025 addresses several key areas essential to the safe design and installation of electrical systems in areas with baths or showers, including:
- Zones Definitions: Detailed determination of safety zones (Zone 0, 1, 2, etc.) in and around bathtubs and showers, which dictate what electrical equipment and wiring may be installed in each area.
- Protection Against Electric Shock: Mandates for devices that provide automatic disconnection of supply and equipotential bonding to minimize the risk of electric shock.
- National Deviations and Special Conditions: Specific requirements adapted to national safety practices or climatic/electrical norms in countries such as Austria, France, Germany, Norway, Spain, Switzerland, and the UK.
- Permitted Electrical Accessories: Guidance on the types of electrical accessories and their degree of protection (e.g., minimum IP rating, class II equipment) allowed within each zone.
- Use of Low-Voltage Safety Systems: Restrictions or permissions for use of systems such as SELV (Separated Extra-Low Voltage) and PELV (Protective Extra-Low Voltage).
- Residual Current Devices (RCDs): Specifications concerning the mandatory installation and permitted types of RCDs for maximum safety.
Applications
Compliance with SIST HD 60364-7-701:2025/A11:2025 is essential for:
- Designers and Installers: Professionals designing or installing electrical installations in bathrooms, wet rooms, hotels, hospitals, leisure centers, or any facility with showers or baths.
- National Committees and Approving Bodies: Organizations tasked with enforcing and certifying safe electrical practices in buildings must reference this standard for conformity assessments.
- Facility Managers and Inspectors: Ensures existing and retrofitted installations in special locations adhere to current safety standards.
- Manufacturers of Electrical Accessories: Ensures all electrical fittings and safety devices intended for use in bathrooms are compliant with zone definitions and protection requirements.
Adhering to this standard reduces the risk of electric shock, facilitates harmonized practices across Europe, and helps meet regulatory and insurance requirements.
Related Standards
For comprehensive compliance with low-voltage electrical installation safety, the following standards are referenced or closely related to SIST HD 60364-7-701:2025/A11:2025:
- HD 60364-4-41:2007 - Protection for safety: Protection against electric shock
- IEC 60364 Series - International standards on electrical installations of buildings
- EN/HD 60335-2-60 - Safety of household and similar electrical appliances: Whirlpools and hot tubs
- National Wiring Regulations - Country-specific rules, such as UK’s BS 7671 or France’s NF C 15-100, referenced for national deviations and conditions
These documents collectively ensure that low-voltage electrical installations in bathrooms and similar locations meet the highest safety standards throughout Europe.

shower basin).
b) for showers without basin:
(further text unchanged, three dashes)

Modify the text as follows:
Zone 1 is limited:
a) for a bath tub with or without shower and for a shower basin by:
(further text unchanged, four dashes)

701.415.2 Add 701.415.2 as follows:
If there is no protective equipotential bonding according to 411.3.1.2 implemented
in existing electrical installations, then additional protective equipotential
bonding according to 415.2.1 shall be provided in locations containing a bath
or shower.
(Sub)clause Special national condition
Finland
701.1 In Finland depth of 6 cm does not apply.
France
701.1 Add the following:
In France, a depth of 6 cm does not apply. The fourth conditions is:
– the volume within the walls, floor and ceiling (excepted perforated ceiling) that
border the location containing a bath or shower.
Any fixed and sustainable wall, joined to a standing surface, does limit volumes
when its height is greater than or equal to that of the volume and then applying
the rule of horizontal bypass. In the other cases, this wall does not delimit the
volumes.
Removable shower walls or walls that are not linked to the ceiling and/or ground
do not delimit the locations containing a bath or a shower.
701.101 Add the following:
In France, the bypass rule does not apply vertically.
Delete Figure 6 (Dimensions of zones 0 and 1: side view of a shower without
basin and with fixed partition).
701.3.4 Add the following:
In France the definition of fixed partition (701.3.4) and its Notes to entry are not
needed.
701.30.101 Add the following sentence after the second paragraph:
"In France, in fixed partitions only fixed walls that belong to the building and
linked to the standing ground limit zones. Fixed partitions that do not meet those
conditions as well as mobile partitions cannot limit zones."
701.30.103 Add the following note
In France
‘The space under a bath tub or a shower basin is not considered to be zone 1 but
as a specific zone.’
701.30.104 According to §701.2 of NF C 15-100/A5. The following sentence doesn’t apply in
France :
“b) for showers, there is no zone 2. (see Figure 5 to Figure 10).”
There is a zone 2 in France for showers.
701.414 Add the following:
in France PELV is not permitted.
701.415.1 Add the following:
In France PELV is not permitted.
701.512.2.4.101.3 In France
– PELV is not permitted.
– SELV with a rated voltage exceeding 12 V AC or 30 V DC is not allowed
