Overview
SIST EN 602:2004 is a key European Standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for the chemical composition of wrought aluminium and aluminium alloys intended for the fabrication of semi-finished products that will come into contact with foodstuffs. This standard establishes maximum permissible levels for alloying elements and impurities in these materials, ensuring that articles made from them are safe and suitable for food contact applications. SIST EN 602:2004 also outlines the conformity assessment process and supports traceability and quality assurance in the manufacturing supply chain.
Key Topics
Chemical Composition Requirements:
- Establishes maximum content levels for elements such as silicon, iron, copper, manganese, magnesium, chromium, nickel, zinc, titanium, and other trace elements.
- Distinguishes between requirements for wrought aluminium and wrought aluminium alloys.
Selection Criteria:
- Only aluminium and aluminium alloys that conform to the specific limits can be used in the production of articles intended for food contact.
- Manufacturers must cross-reference compositions with EN 573-3 to ensure compliance.
Conformity Demonstration:
- Emphasizes the need for a robust quality assurance system in manufacturing processes.
- Requires traceability from raw materials to finished products and adequate documentation of compliance with the standard.
Inspection and Certification:
- Mandates the issuance of inspection certificates (EN 10204:1991 type 3.1) to certify compliance with SIST EN 602:2004.
Applications
SIST EN 602:2004 is applicable to a broad range of industries and manufacturers producing materials and articles that are intended for direct contact with food. Examples include:
- Food Packaging: Semi-finished aluminium sheets, foils, and containers produced for food wrapping, trays, and lids.
- Household Utensils: Cookware, tableware, and kitchen items such as pots, pans, and cutlery that may be fabricated from certified aluminium alloys.
- Industrial Food Processing Equipment: Aluminium components used in machinery or equipment for the preparation, processing, packaging, and storage of food products.
- Catering and Food Service Products: Items such as serving dishes, display trays, and beverage cans designed for repeated or single-use food contact.
Manufacturers, suppliers, and food producers rely on this standard to guarantee product safety, meet regulatory obligations, and assure customers of compliance with food safety requirements for aluminium articles.
Related Standards
Several related standards support and complement SIST EN 602:2004 in the context of aluminium and food contact materials:
- EN 573-3 - Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Chemical composition and form of wrought products.
- EN 10204:1991 - Metallic products - Types of inspection documents, which describes inspection certificate requirements.
- EN 12258-1:1998 - Aluminium and aluminium alloys - Terms and definitions.
- Food Contact Materials Legislation - National and EU regulations governing the safety of materials intended to come into contact with food.
Practical Value
Compliance with SIST EN 602:2004 helps manufacturers and suppliers to:
- Ensure the safety of aluminium products intended for food contact by limiting potentially harmful elements.
- Demonstrate conformity with European regulatory expectations, facilitating market access across EU countries.
- Establish robust quality control and traceability systems that enhance product reliability and consumer confidence.
- Reduce the risk of product recalls or legal issues associated with non-compliant food contact materials.
By following this standard, companies maintain high safety standards, protect consumers, and streamline compliance across the European Economic Area.
