SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 This test method is intended to measure volatile extractables that may be emitted from a microwave susceptor material during use. It may be a useful procedure to assist in minimizing the amount of volatile extractables either through susceptor design or manufacturing processes.
5.2 Modification of this procedure by utilizing appropriate qualitative GC detection such as a mass spectrometer in place of the flame ionization detector may provide identification of volatile extractables of unknown identity.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method covers complete microwave susceptors.
1.2 This test method covers a procedure for quantitating volatile compounds whose identity has been established and which are evolved when a microwave susceptor sample is tested under simulated use conditions.
1.3 This test method was collaboratively evaluated with a variety of volatile compounds (see statistical evaluation). For compounds other than those evaluated, the analyst should determine the sensitivity and reproducibility of the method by carrying out appropriate spike and recovery studies. The analyst is referred to Practice E260 for guidance.
1.4 For purposes of verifying the identity of or identifying unknown volatile compounds, the analyst is encouraged to incorporate techniques such as gas chromatography/mass spectroscopy, gas chromatography/infrared spectroscopy, or other techniques in conjunction with this test method.
1.5 A sensitivity level of approximately 0.025 μg/in.2 is achievable for the compounds studied in Table 1. Where other compounds are being quantitated and uncertainty exists over method sensitivity, the analyst is referred to Practice E260 for procedures on determining sensitivity of chromatographic methods.

Requirements for the conformance to this practice are given. Determination of labeling and labeling practices such as, signal word, list of potential chronic hazards, name of chronic hazard components, safe handling, instructions, list of sensitizing components, combined statements, information sources, and supplement information are detailed.
SCOPE
1.1 This practice describes a procedure for developing precautionary labels for ceramic art materials and provides hazard and precautionary statements based upon knowledge that exists in the scientific and medical communities. This practice concerns those chronic adverse health hazards known to be associated with a product or product component(s), when the component(s) is present in a physical form, volume, or concentration that in the opinion of a toxicologist has the potential to produce a chronic adverse health effect(s).
1.2 This practice is intended to apply exclusively to ceramic art materials which are packaged in sizes intended for use by artists or crafts people, either individually, or in a small group or class.
1.3 This practice applies to developing precautionary labeling for ceramic art materials intended for adult usage. Conformance to this practice does not imply that ceramic art materials will necessarily be labeled adequately or safe for use by children. Labeling determinations should consider reasonably foreseeable use or misuse by children and include as appropriate, in such instances, warnings to keep out of reach, or other specific precautionary statements. The responsibility for precautionary labeling rests with the ceramic producer or repackager who markets the material for art or craft use.
1.4 This practice does not specify test methods for determining whether a substance or product presents chronic adverse health hazards.
1.5 This practice does not apply to products appropriately labeled for known chronic adverse health hazards according to chemical substances labeling standards and practices, such as another national consensus standard, existing labeling statutes, regulations, or guidelines.
1.6 Since knowledge about chronic adverse health hazards is incomplete and warning cannot cover all uses of any product, it is not possible for precautionary labeling to assure completely safe use of an art product.

This document specifies an analytical test method for the determination of anthraquinone (see Table 1) in water and 95 % ethanol extracts of pulp, paper and board materials and articles intended to come into contact with foodstuffs using a gas chromatograph coupled to a mass spectrometer (GC-MS). Moreover, acetone extracts of modified polyphenylene oxide (MPPO) that, according to EN 14338, can be used as a simulant to assess the possible transfer/migration of substances from paper and board into dry, non-fatty foodstuffs can be analysed with the method presented here.
This method can be applied to determine anthraquinone in concentrations ranging from 2 μg/l to 40 μg/l in the water and solvent extracts, corresponding to 0,05 mg/kg to 1 mg/kg pulp, paper and board or, respectively, 0,1 μg/dm2 to 2 μg/dm2 in the case of migration tests with MPPO. The measurement range can be lowered by enriching anthraquinone from the water and solvent extracts.

SIGNIFICANCE AND USE
5.1 Many materials that come into contact with drinking water have the potential of impacting the aesthetic quality of the water. Some of these diverse materials include: storage reservoirs, concrete or metal piping, or both, sealants, synthetic reservoir covers and liners, mending adhesives, gaskets, paints, and plastics. Though NSF Standard 61 provides testing for health effects, it does not address taste and odor implications. A Utility Quick Test (1),4 has been proposed, but has not been adopted as an official test standard. Taste and odor problems have been reported as a result of organic compounds leaching from approved materials into water. Materials only need to be tested if they come into direct contact with drinking water.
SCOPE
1.1 This test method describes procedures for measuring odor and flavor properties of materials which may come into direct contact with municipal drinking water. For this method, “drinking water” will be considered water from the source (for example, river, lake, reservoir) through the municipal distribution system (that is, not including in-home or in-business taps). The focus of this test method is the evaluation of the materials in terms of their potential to transfer odors, flavors, or both to water.
1.2 This test method provides sample preparation procedures, methods of sensory evaluation, and a process for interpretation of results.
1.3 This standard does not purport to address all of the safety concerns, if any, associated with its use. All materials that come into contact with drinking water are required to be approved through testing by accredited laboratories using NSF/ANSI Standard 61. It is the responsibility of the user of this standard to establish appropriate safety, health, and environmental practices and determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
