Overview
SIST EN 301 489-51 V1.1.1:2017 is a harmonised European standard specifying Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC) requirements for automotive and ground-based radar devices, as well as surveillance radar equipment operating in the frequency bands 24.05 GHz to 24.25 GHz, 24.05 GHz to 24.5 GHz, 76 GHz to 77 GHz, and 77 GHz to 81 GHz. Developed under the framework of Directive 2014/53/EU (Radio Equipment Directive, RED), this standard ensures essential EMC requirements, promoting safe and reliable operation of radar technology used in vehicles and critical infrastructure.
This document applies in conjunction with ETSI EN 301 489-1, which details common EMC technical requirements. It focuses on defining specific test conditions, performance assessments, and criteria tailored for millimetre-wave radar applications in automotive and surveillance domains.
Key Topics
- Electromagnetic Compatibility (EMC): Outlines immunity and emission requirements for automotive and surveillance radar devices to prevent electromagnetic interference.
- Frequency Bands: Applies to equipment operating in the millimetre-wave bands: 24.05-24.25 GHz, 24.05-24.5 GHz, 76-77 GHz, and 77-81 GHz.
- Test Methods and Conditions: Specifies applicable test conditions, performance criteria, and test arrangements for transmitters, receivers, and combined systems.
- Performance Criteria: Establishes clear criteria for assessing radar equipment compliance, including immunity to continuous or transient electromagnetic phenomena.
- Use Cases: Includes automotive Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS), ground vehicle and infrastructure monitoring, as well as obstacle detection in railway, road, and aviation sectors.
- Legal Compliance: Provides presumption of conformity with Article 3.1(b) of Directive 2014/53/EU regarding EMC essential requirements for placing radio equipment on the EU market.
Applications
The standard is critical for manufacturers, integrators, and testing laboratories involved in:
- Automotive Radar Systems:
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
- Blind Spot Detection (BSD)
- Parking and backup aids
- Autonomous braking and pre-crash systems
- Ground-Based Vehicle Surveillance:
- Radar for trains, trams, and airport vehicles (e.g., for taxiing aircraft)
- Traffic and Infrastructure Monitoring:
- Fixed radars for traffic flow and obstacle detection at road and railway crossings
- Obstacle Detection:
- Systems designed for helicopters and railway/road crossings
By adhering to this standard, stakeholders ensure radar devices operate safely without causing or suffering from electromagnetic disturbances, supporting advanced mobility solutions and infrastructure safety.
Related Standards
For comprehensive EMC compliance and radio equipment testing, the following references are essential:
- ETSI EN 301 489-1: Common technical EMC requirements for radio equipment and services; forms the basis for specific standards like EN 301 489-51.
- Directive 2014/53/EU (RED): The legal framework mandating essential EMC requirements for radio equipment within the EU.
- Product-specific radar standards: Technical specifications related to antenna ports and enclosure emissions are addressed in dedicated product standards not covered by EN 301 489-51.
SIST EN 301 489-51 V1.1.1:2017 is a key standard for ensuring electromagnetic compatibility in millimetre-wave radar applications for automotive, ground vehicle, and surveillance systems, supporting safety, reliability, and regulatory compliance across the European market.
