Overview

SIST EN ISO 15029-1:2000 is a critical international standard for the petroleum industry, focusing on the fire safety of fire-resistant fluids. Developed by CEN and ISO, it specifies the hollow-cone nozzle method for determining the spray ignition characteristics, specifically the spray flame persistence, of fire-resistant fluids. This test method is a core part of evaluating the fire hazard of hydraulic and lubricating fluids used in industries where fire safety is paramount.

The standard provides a consistent methodology for assessing how long a spray flame persists after ignition, a key indicator of fire resistance. This property is especially important for mineral oil products and related fluids used in high-risk environments such as mining, steel mills, and power generation facilities.

Key Topics

  • Spray Flame Persistence: Evaluates the maximum time a spray of fire-resistant fluid continues to burn after the ignition source is removed. This metric is fundamental to fire hazard classification.
  • Hollow-Cone Nozzle Method: The method involves atomizing the fluid through a hollow-cone nozzle and measuring the burning time at multiple points along the spray.
  • Test Conditions: Includes details on sampling, pressurizing, heating, and atomizing the test fluid, followed by ignition and timed observation of flame persistence.
  • Sample Handling: Specifies procedures for collecting, storing, and preparing fluid samples to ensure consistent and reliable results.
  • Applicable Safety Measures: Emphasizes the importance of proper safety practices when handling hazardous fluids and equipment during testing.

Applications

The methodology outlined in EN ISO 15029-1 has significant practical value for:

  • Hydraulic Fluid Safety Assessment: Used by manufacturers and industrial users to classify the fire resistance of hydraulic fluids, helping ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Supports health and safety regulations, such as those found in the mining and extractive industries, where flame persistence testing is mandated.
  • Quality Control: Enables laboratories and quality assurance teams to benchmark fire-resistant fluids for critical machinery, enhancing operational safety.
  • Product Development: Informs the design and formulation of new fire-resistant fluids for demanding environments where minimizing fire risk is essential.
  • Risk Management in Industry: Assists safety engineers in evaluating and selecting fluids that meet strict fire safety standards, reducing potential hazards in industrial settings.

Related Standards

SIST EN ISO 15029-1:2000 is part of a broader family of standards that address the safety, classification, and performance of fire-resistant fluids used in hydraulic and related applications:

  • ISO 15029-2 - Spray test: Stabilized flame heat release method
  • ISO 15029-3 - Spray test: Large scale method
  • ISO 6743-4 - Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L): Classification, Family H (Hydraulic Systems)
  • ISO 7745 - Hydraulic fluid power: Fire-resistant (FR) fluids - Guidelines for use
  • ISO 12922 - Specifications for categories of fire-resistant hydraulic fluids
  • ISO 14935 - Petroleum and related products: Determination of wick flame persistence of fire-resistant fluids

Conclusion

SIST EN ISO 15029-1:2000 provides a robust and reliable method for determining the spray ignition characteristics of fire-resistant fluids, supporting safety in high-risk industrial operations. By standardizing the assessment of spray flame persistence, it plays a vital role in product development, quality control, and regulatory compliance across industries that rely on fire-resistant hydraulic and lubricating fluids.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
International Standard ISO 15029-1 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 28, Petroleum products and
lubricants.
ISO 15029 consists of the following parts, under the general title Petroleum and related products — Determination
of spray ignition characteristics of fire-resistant fluids:
 Part 1: Spray flame persistence — Hollow-cone nozzle method
 Part 2: Spray test — Stabilized flame heat release method
 Part 3: Spray test — Large scale method
In hydraulic fluid power systems, power is transmitted and controlled through a liquid under pressure within an
enclosed circuit. One type of such a liquid is fire-resistant fluid. The following International Standards are suitable for
the classification, specification and guidance for use of such fluids:
ISO 6743-4:1999, Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) — Classification — Part 4: Family H
(Hydraulic systems).
ISO 7745:1989, Hydraulic fluid power — Fire-resistant (FR) fluids — Guidelines for use.
ISO 12922:1999, Lubricants, industrial oils and related products (class L) — Family H (Hydraulic systems) —
Specifications for categories HFAE, HFAS, HFB, HFC, HFDR and HFDU.
The following International Standard may be useful for the assessment of the flame propagation and persistence of
a flame applied to the edge of a wick of non-flammable material immersed in fire-resistant fluid:
ISO 14935:1998, Petroleum and related products — Determination of wick flame persistence of fire-resistant fluids.
