Overview

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-84:2022/A11:2022 is a European standard published by CLC, focusing on the safety requirements for household and similar electrical toilet appliances. These appliances operate at rated voltages up to 250 V and are designed to store, dry, destruct excrement, or wash and dry parts of the human body. The standard is an amendment that brings updates to the previous editions, aligning with the essential safety objectives of the EU Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU).

This document aims to mitigate hazards associated with electric toilet appliances in residential and comparable settings, thus ensuring reliable protection for users, including vulnerable or inexperienced individuals. For manufacturers, compliance demonstrates a commitment to safety and can facilitate market access within Europe.

Key Topics

  • Safety Principles: The standard outlines essential safety design and usage requirements to minimize foreseeable hazards when using electric toilet appliances.
  • User Considerations: Addresses the risks related to use by all persons, refining the approach to marking and instructions, particularly for children from 3 years and above and persons with reduced capabilities.
  • Electrical Safety: Ensures that toilet appliances operated at voltages up to 250 V meet stringent electrical protection criteria.
  • Harmonization: Supports compliance with the EU Low Voltage Directive and references relevant international publications and related European standards.
  • Documentation Requirements: Specifies the necessary marking and user instructions to ensure proper operation and safe interaction with the appliance.

Applications

SIST EN IEC 60335-2-84:2022/A11:2022 applies to a range of household and similar electrical toilet appliances such as:

  • Electric bidets and toilet seats
  • Toilet appliances designed for excrement storage, drying, or destruction
  • Units that incorporate washing or drying features for body hygiene
  • Specialized sanitary appliances used in domestic bathrooms or similar environments

Practical Value:

  • Manufacturers: Ensures product design and instructions align with European safety requirements, reducing the risk of non-compliance and supporting market certification.
  • Consumers: Provides assurance that products are constructed with robust safety features, covering typical usage scenarios and the presence of vulnerable individuals, such as children from age 3 or those with limited capabilities.
  • Regulators and Importers: Simplifies evaluation of conformity for market surveillance and compliance with EU directives.

Related Standards

Manufacturers and stakeholders should be aware of several key standards referenced in or related to SIST EN IEC 60335-2-84:2022/A11:2022:

  • EN IEC 60335-1: General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
  • IEC 60068-2-52: Environmental testing - Salt mist, cyclic (sodium chloride solution) testing, relevant for appliance durability.
  • EN 60335-2-84 (previous versions): Earlier revisions superseded by the current document for harmonized safety approaches.
  • Directive 2014/35/EU: The Low Voltage Directive, establishing the European legal framework for electrical equipment safety.
  • Additional CENELEC and IEC standards: May apply for broader or more detailed safety and testing requirements.

By adhering to SIST EN IEC 60335-2-84:2022/A11:2022, manufacturers and users can ensure high levels of product safety, regulatory compliance, and consumer trust for electric toilet appliances. This supports innovation, safety, and market access across the European Economic Area.
