Overview

SIST EN ISO 4042:2022/A1:2026 is an amendment to the internationally recognized ISO 4042:2022 standard, developed by CEN, that addresses electroplated coating systems for fasteners. This amendment introduces updated technical provisions, particularly focusing on zinc-nickel (ZnNi) coating systems, which are critical for providing corrosion protection in industrial, mechanical, and construction applications.

By establishing common requirements for electroplated coatings on fasteners, this standard ensures quality, performance, and compatibility in European and global markets. The document is relevant for manufacturers, users, and regulatory bodies involved with metallic fasteners and their surface treatments.

Key Topics

  • Electroplated coating requirements: The amendment specifies criteria for a range of metallic coatings applied to fasteners, focusing on functional performance and surface protection.
  • Zinc-nickel (ZnNi) passivation: An important revision in this amendment is the addition of transparent passivation as an alternative to iridescent (silver grey) passivation for ZnNi coatings. Transparent passivation can deliver an equivalent level of corrosion protection, even with reduced layer thickness.
  • Neutral salt spray (NSS) test: The standard highlights the use of the NSS test for assessing the corrosion resistance of zinc-based electroplated coatings, supporting the quality assurance of finished fasteners.
  • Technical footnotes: The amendment adds technical clarifications via footnotes in the relevant tables to guide users on permitted coating systems.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 4042:2022/A1:2026 is instrumental for a variety of sectors that depend on the durability and reliability of coated fasteners, including:

  • Automotive industry: Ensuring corrosion resistance and extended service life for bolts, screws, and nuts in vehicles.
  • Construction and civil engineering: Maintaining integrity of metallic fasteners in buildings, infrastructure, and steel structures.
  • Machinery and equipment manufacturing: Improving operational reliability by minimizing corrosion-related failures.
  • Aerospace and defense: Meeting stringent requirements for surface coatings to withstand harsh environments.

By aligning production and inspection practices with the standard, stakeholders ensure fasteners meet consistent quality benchmarks, enhance product longevity, and comply with applicable regulations and client specifications.

Related Standards

Users of SIST EN ISO 4042:2022/A1:2026 may also reference the following relevant standards:

  • ISO 4042:2022: The base standard for electroplated coating systems for fasteners.
  • EN ISO 10683: Specifies non-electrolytically applied zinc flake coatings on fasteners.
  • ISO 9227: Provides methods for conducting salt spray tests to evaluate corrosion resistance.
  • ISO 898 series: Relates to mechanical properties of fasteners.

These related standards complement EN ISO 4042 by providing additional guidance on testing, performance, and coating application for fasteners across various industries.

By adopting SIST EN ISO 4042:2022/A1:2026, organizations benefit from improved durability and performance of coated fasteners, simplified international trade, and enhanced customer confidence in metallic joint assemblies. This amendment is a key resource for those aiming to implement state-of-the-art fastener coating technologies aligned with the latest international best practices.
