Overview
EN 755-6:2008 defines the tolerances on dimensions and form for extruded hexagonal bars made from aluminium and aluminium alloys, with widths across flats ranging from 10 mm to 220 mm. Published by CEN, this European Standard ensures that extruded hexagonal bars meet precise manufacturing and quality requirements for use in engineering and industrial applications. The standard references temper designations in accordance with EN 515 and is part of the broader EN 755 series, which covers extruded rods/bars, tubes, and profiles.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: Applies exclusively to extruded hexagonal bars in aluminium and aluminium alloys with specified size ranges.
- Alloy Group Classification: The standard categorizes alloys into Group I and Group II, reflecting their typical use in general engineering and differences in manufacturing complexity.
- Dimensional Tolerances: Details specific permissible variations in width across flats, corner radii, and length to ensure consistency and interchangeability.
- Tolerances on Form: Addresses permissible variation in bar straightness, squareness of cut ends, convexity-concavity, and twist.
- Supplier and Purchaser Agreements: Where applicable, allows for agreement on tolerances and lengths between supplier and purchaser, providing flexibility for specific project requirements.
- Reference to Temper Designations: Utilizes temper codes as laid out in EN 515, linking mechanical properties to tolerance requirements.
Applications
EN 755-6:2008 is widely used across industries that require precise and reliable aluminium components. Its practical applications include:
- Machining and Manufacturing: Hexagonal aluminium bars are often further processed into bolts, nuts, fasteners, and precision components, where tight dimensional tolerances are essential for assembly and fit.
- Construction and Engineering: Used as structural elements in frameworks, supports, and custom profiles where consistent quality and form are needed.
- Transport and Automotive: Supports lightweight yet durable construction, making it valuable for vehicle frameworks, parts, and accessories.
- Energy and Electrical: Aluminium’s conductivity and formability make these extruded hexagonal bars suitable for electrical bus bars and connectors, especially where specified dimensions are crucial.
- General Industrial Use: Any application requiring aluminium bars with a hexagonal cross-section, where machinability and compliance with international standards are key.
Adhering to EN 755-6:2008 provides manufacturers and end-users with reliable verification that materials will conform to expected tolerances, facilitating smoother integration into assemblies and systems and reducing the risk of nonconformity or part failure.
Related Standards
EN 755-6:2008 is part of the EN 755 series, which comprehensively addresses different forms of extruded aluminium products. Relevant related standards for those working with aluminium extrusions include:
- EN 755-1: Technical conditions for inspection and delivery
