Overview

SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A1:2017 is the Slovenian adoption of the European standard EN 1993-1-5:2006/A1:2017, commonly referred to as Eurocode 3: Design of steel structures - Part 1-5: Plated structural elements. Developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this standard outlines technical requirements and calculation methods for designing plated steel structural elements within buildings and civil engineering works. Plated elements include components such as steel plates and panels used in structural applications.

This standard amendment, published in June 2017, ensures harmonization with European requirements, supporting efficient and consistent design approaches across all CEN member states.

Key Topics

SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A1:2017 covers essential modifications and guidelines regarding the design and assessment of plated steel elements. Key subjects include:

  • Design Requirements: Specifies criteria for ensuring structural safety, stability, and serviceability of plated steel components.
  • Effective Loaded Length: Updates and corrects equations to ensure accurate calculation of the effective loaded length for design purposes.
  • Reduced Stress Method: Revises the application of the reduced stress method for plates subjected to various load combinations, including guidance for biaxial compression.
  • Interaction Formulae: Addresses combined effects of shear force, bending moment, axial, and transverse forces in compliance assessments.
  • National Annexes: Allows national annexes to provide additional guidance for specific formulae, adapting Eurocode provisions to local conditions.

Applications

The primary application of SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A1:2017 is in the design of steel structures that utilize plated elements. This standard is vital for professionals involved in:

  • Structural Engineering: Provides engineers with calculation methods for stability and resistance, aiding in the safe and efficient design of steel plates in buildings, bridges, and industrial facilities.
  • Construction Projects: Supports architects, fabricators, and contractors in specifying and constructing steel plate elements that meet European and Slovenian requirements.
  • Regulatory Compliance: Assists regulatory bodies and inspectors in verifying structural adequacy in accordance with harmonized European standards.
  • Civil Infrastructure: Applies to significant civil projects, such as bridge decks, silos, and tanks, where steel plating forms a core structural component.

Related Standards

For comprehensive steel structure design, SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A1:2017 should be used alongside other key Eurocode standards, including:

  • EN 1993-1-1: General rules and rules for buildings - fundamental design provisions for steel structures.
  • EN 1993-1-3: Supplementary rules for cold-formed members and sheeting.
  • EN 1990: Eurocode - Basis of structural design.
  • EN 1991: Actions on structures.
  • EN 1090: Execution of steel structures and aluminium structures.

Adopting and correctly applying Eurocode 3 Part 1-5 promotes high safety standards, interoperability across borders, and regulatory compliance within the European Union and Slovenia.
