Overview

SIST EN 1993-1-4:2007/A2:2021 is the Slovenian adoption of the amended European Standard EN 1993-1-4:2006/A2:2020. This standard forms part of Eurocode 3, focusing on the design of steel structures and setting out supplementary rules for stainless steels. Issued by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), the amendment harmonizes the national approach to the use of stainless steels in structural engineering with the latest European practices.

The update specifically addresses general rules and additional requirements essential for designing stainless steel structures, ensuring safety, structural integrity, and long-term durability in line with evolving technical knowledge and international best practices.

Key Topics

  • Supplementary Stainless Steel Rules: The standard outlines additional criteria for stainless steel components, reflecting the distinct properties and behavior of these materials compared to carbon steels.
  • Buckling Behavior: Refinements to buckling curves Table 5.3, providing updated values of α and λ for different stainless steel profiles including cold-formed and hot-finished hollow sections, channels, and angles.
  • Consistency with Eurocodes: Ensures coherence with the main body of Eurocode 3 and proper integration with basic general rules, enhancing structural safety in various applications.
  • Compliance and Harmonization: The amendment supports the withdrawal of conflicting national standards, securing unified European technical regulations for stainless steel structures.

Applications

Eurocode 3 Part 1-4, as amended by SIST EN 1993-1-4:2007/A2:2021, is crucial for:

  • Building and Infrastructure Projects: Applied in the design and assessment of buildings, bridges, and related civil engineering works utilizing stainless steel elements.
  • Industrial Facilities: Used for structures requiring high corrosion resistance, such as chemical plants, process industries, and marine environments.
  • Architectural Applications: Facilitates creative and visually appealing structural concepts where aesthetics and longevity are paramount.
  • Public Safety and Reliability: Promotes safe design practices, structural reliability, and regulatory compliance in all projects using stainless steel.

Professionals such as structural engineers, architects, and construction contractors benefit from the standard by gaining access to harmonized guidelines for using stainless steels, leading to streamlined workflows and enhanced design confidence.

Related Standards

  • EN 1993-1-1: Eurocode 3 - Design of steel structures - General rules and rules for buildings.
  • EN 1993 Series: Other parts of Eurocode 3, covering bridges, towers, and masts.
  • EN 1994 (Eurocode 4): Design of composite steel and concrete structures.
  • EN 10088: Stainless steels - List of standard stainless steels and definitions.
  • ICS Codes:
    • 77.140.20 (Stainless steels)
    • 91.010.30 (Technical aspects of construction)
    • 91.080.13 (Steel structures)

By aligning with SIST EN 1993-1-4:2007/A2:2021, organizations ensure compliance with both national and European legislation, facilitating cross-border projects and enhancing the international competitiveness of local industries.
