Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-29:2022/A1:2022 is a key European standard published by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC/CLC) that specifies the particular safety requirements for electric battery chargers intended for household and similar purposes. These chargers operate with a safety extra-low voltage and are rated for input voltages up to 250 V. The standard addresses the risks associated with these devices to ensure user safety in typical domestic and comparable environments.

This amendment (A1:2021) updates and aligns the standard with current safety practices, harmonizing it with the latest IEC standards and EU directives. The document is essential for manufacturers, designers, and regulators involved in the development and approval of household battery chargers.

Key Topics

  • Product Scope: Electric battery chargers for household and similar use, with output at safety extra-low voltage and rated voltage not exceeding 250 V.
  • Definitions: Terms related to battery chargers, types (such as type 1 and type 2 chargers), normal operation, and key electrical parameters like rated DC output voltage and current.
  • Markings and Instructions: Requirements for user instructions and symbols, including clear warnings for safe operation, advisories against charging non-rechargeable batteries, and indoor-use/moderate moisture exposure guidance.
  • Design and Construction: Specification of isolating transformers, insulation standards (double or reinforced insulation), and protections against access to live parts.
  • Operational Safety: Testing protocols for output voltage and current, protection against overheating, compliance with safety extra-low voltage, and requirements for well-ventilated charging conditions for certain battery types.
  • Component Compliance: Reference to relevant standards for components, particularly isolating transformers (IEC 61558-2-4), and detailed requirements for overload protection and insulation distances.
  • EU Compliance: The standard aids in meeting essential safety requirements in EU directives and helps facilitate product approval and CE marking.

Applications

SIST EN 60335-2-29:2022/A1:2022 is widely applied in the design, manufacture, testing, and certification of battery chargers for:

  • Portable battery chargers for household use
  • Chargers integrated within domestic electrical appliances
  • Charging systems for small battery-powered devices (e.g., power tools, toys, personal electronics)
  • Battery chargers used in light commercial settings with similar safety needs

Adhering to this standard ensures:

  • Reduced risk of electric shock and fire hazards
  • Clear guidance for manufacturers regarding labeling and user instructions
  • Compatibility with European and international electrical safety regulations
  • Streamlined market access within the EU and EFTA regions

Manufacturers can rely on this standard to demonstrate due diligence in product safety, supporting successful compliance assessments and customer confidence.

Related Standards

Several standards are referenced within EN 60335-2-29 and are critical for full compliance:

  • IEC 61558-2-4: Safety of transformers, reactors, power supply units, and similar products for supply voltages up to 1,100 V - Particular requirements for isolating transformers.
  • IEC 60335-1: General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances, forming the foundation for the EN 60335 series.
  • IEC/EN 60664-4: Insulation coordination for equipment within low-voltage systems.
  • ISO 7000 and IEC 60417: Standardized symbols for markings used on appliances and in instructions.

Other relevant standards within the same family or area:

  • EN 60335-2-76: Particular safety requirements for electric fence energisers.
  • EN 60335-2-2x series: Covering other appliances such as vacuum cleaners, washing machines, and heating appliances.

Adhering to SIST EN 60335-2-29:2022/A1:2022 together with its referenced standards ensures robust safety and legal compliance for battery chargers in the European market.
