Overview
SIST EN 13421:2006 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies procedures for the preparation of specimens from compression moulding composites. The standard focuses on determining the anisotropy of properties caused by material flow during the compression moulding process. Anisotropy refers to the directional dependence of material properties, which is a critical factor in the design and testing of fibre-reinforced plastics.
This standard is applicable to compression-moulded Sheet Moulding Compound (SMC), Bulk Moulding Compound (BMC), Glass Mat Thermoplastics (GMT), and Long Fibre Thermoplastics (LFT) composites. The procedures outlined are designed to ensure that test specimens represent the actual material behaviour under real-world manufacturing conditions. SIST EN 13421:2006 is relevant for all professionals involved in the production, testing, and quality assurance of thermoset and reinforced plastic mouldings.
Key Topics
- Preparation of Specimens: The standard details the cutting and machining procedures for obtaining test specimens from compression-moulded plates. It ensures the samples are representative of material flow-induced anisotropy.
- Applicable Materials: Covers all SMC, BMC, GMT, and LFT composites manufactured under defined conditions as described in EN ISO 12115 and ISO 1268-9.
- Moulding Conditions: Specifies that test specimens must be prepared from plates compression-moulded under standardized conditions to ensure reliable and comparable results across different laboratories and production batches.
- Measurement of Anisotropy: Focuses on extracting specimens both parallel and perpendicular to the direction of material flow, allowing for robust evaluation of directional property differences.
- Health and Safety: Highlights the obligation to comply with national safety regulations when handling composite materials and specimens.
- Reporting Requirements: Outlines the information that must be included in manufacturing test reports, such as identification, dates, specimen dimensions, and details about any rejected samples.
Applications
SIST EN 13421:2006 provides practical value in several areas of the plastics and composites industry:
- Product Development: Enables material engineers and designers to quantify anisotropic properties, improving design accuracy for load-bearing or stress-sensitive components.
- Quality Assurance: Supports consistent verification of composite properties, critical for compliance with contractual and regulatory requirements.
- Material Comparison: Facilitates benchmarking of different thermoset moulding compounds or processing technologies by providing a standardized testing method.
- Process Optimization: Data derived from anisotropy assessments help optimize moulding processes to achieve desired mechanical performance in final products.
- Regulatory Compliance: Conformance with SIST EN 13421:2006 can be required by clients or authorities for the supply of components in automotive, construction, or consumer goods sectors.
Related Standards
For comprehensive testing and production control, SIST EN 13421:2006 is used alongside other relevant international standards:
- EN ISO 12115: Thermosetting moulding compounds - Determination of flowability, maturation, and shelf life
- ISO 1268-9: Methods of producing test plates - Moulding of GMT/STC
