Overview
SIST EN 60335-2-41:2003/A2:2011 is a harmonized European standard specifying the particular safety requirements for pumps used in household and similar electrical appliances. Developed and ratified by CLC (CENELEC), this amendment applies to pumps intended for domestic use and sets out essential safety provisions to minimize risks associated with their operation. The standard helps in ensuring a consistent level of protection for end users, especially in settings where electrical pumps are commonly used for water, aquariums, fountains, and similar household applications.
This amendment adapts and supplements the broader EN 60335-2-41:2003 standard, integrating specific requirements and updates necessary for compliance within the European Union market. It is recognized as a product family standard, taking precedence over general and generic safety standards in its field.
Key Topics
- Scope of Application: The standard covers electrical pumps used in residences and spaces with comparable usage profiles, focusing on protecting against hazards such as electric shock, fire, and mechanical injury.
- User Safety: Addresses the needs of vulnerable individuals, including children and those with reduced physical, sensory, or mental capabilities, emphasizing the importance of supervision and precise instructions.
- Supply Cord Requirements: Establishes specific guidelines for the minimum supply cord length for submersible pumps (excluding class III, aquarium, and table fountain pumps), ensuring safe installation and operation.
- Resistance to Fire and Heat: Outlines requirements for pumps regarding fire hazards, especially for submersible models, taking into account enclosure materials and necessary instructions about the use of a residual current device (RCD).
- Supplemental Guidance: Specifies that these requirements are in addition to those covered in the general EN 60335-1 series, ensuring comprehensive safety coverage.
Applications
The implementation of SIST EN 60335-2-41:2003/A2:2011 delivers clear benefits to manufacturers, regulators, and end users of household pumps:
- Manufacturers: Ensures products are designed and built to meet stringent European safety rules, reducing the risk of electrical fires, shocks, and other hazards.
- Compliance and Certification: Facilitates conformity assessment, CE marking, and market placement across the EU and EFTA countries, streamlining the product approval process.
- Safety in Use: Provides a recognized benchmark for product safety, helping buyers, consumers, and facility managers choose compliant pumps, especially where children or vulnerable people might be present.
- Product Types: Applies to a wide range of domestic pump types, including water pumps for gardens, indoor fountains, aquarium pumps, and submersible pumps, among others.
Related Standards
For complete compliance and enhanced safety, users and manufacturers should also consider the following related standards:
- EN 60335-1: General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
- IEC 60335-2-41: International equivalent standard offering a harmonized approach to pump safety.
- ISO 13732-1: Provides guidelines on human responses to contact with hot surfaces, referenced in the context of thermal hazards.
- Additional EN 60335-2-x series: Covers particular requirements for different types of household appliances.
By adhering to SIST EN 60335-2-41:2003/A2:2011, all stakeholders support higher domestic safety standards for household electrical pumps, promote regulatory alignment, and foster greater consumer trust across European markets.
