Railway applications - Axlebox lubricating greases - Part 2: Method to test the mechanical stability to cover vehicle speeds up to 200 km/h
This European Standard specifies a test method and sets the acceptance criteria for the determination of the mechanical stability of lubricating greases intended for the lubrication of axlebox bearings according to EN 12081. In the test, impacts are applied to the lubricating grease so that only very stable lubricating greases will perform acceptably. The method is used in a discrimination process for finding lubricating greases of such mechanical stability that they are considered accepted lubricating greases for more extensive performance tests according to EN 12082.
For purposes of quality assurance and quality control, this test method is also used for batch testing of lubricating greases.

Overview
SIST EN 14865-2:2006/kFprA2:2010 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a critical test method and acceptance criteria for assessing the mechanical stability of axlebox lubricating greases used in railway applications. This standard focuses on greases intended for axlebox bearings operating at vehicle speeds up to 200 km/h, aligning with the requirements of EN 12081. The method is designed to ensure that only highly stable lubricants proceed to more rigorous performance validation-essential for the safety, reliability, and longevity of modern rail vehicles.
Key Topics
- Mechanical Stability Testing: The standard details procedures to determine the ability of axlebox lubricating greases to maintain their performance under mechanical stress, such as impacts and vibration that simulate real-life railway operating conditions.
- Acceptance Criteria: It sets forth clear criteria by which only greases with sufficient mechanical stability are approved for further performance testing according to EN 12082.
- Quality Assurance and Control: EN 14865-2 serves as a reference for routine batch testing, supporting quality assurance (QA) and quality control (QC) across production cycles.
- Regulatory Compliance: The standard supports the essential requirements of EU Directive 2008/57/EC on the interoperability of the European rail system, providing a presumption of conformity when implemented as a national standard.
Applications
The test method defined in SIST EN 14865-2:2006/kFprA2:2010 is used by:
- Railway Grease Manufacturers: To ensure axlebox lubricating greases meet mechanical stability requirements before proceeding to extensive and costly performance tests.
- Rail Operators and Maintenance Providers: For selecting suitable lubricants that enhance axlebox bearing reliability, minimize maintenance costs, and improve operational safety for trains traveling up to 200 km/h.
- Quality Control Laboratories: As a standard procedure for regular batch testing, ensuring product consistency and compliance with European railway standards.
- Certification and Regulatory Bodies: To assess the conformity of railway lubricants with interoperability and safety requirements as set out by European Directives and regulatory frameworks.
Related Standards
- EN 12081 – Railway Applications - Axleboxes - Rolling Bearings: Defines requirements for axlebox rolling bearings, to which the lubricants tested under EN 14865-2 are applied.
- EN 12082 – Railway Applications - Axleboxes - Performance Testing: Covers the extended performance tests for lubricants that have passed the mechanical stability test.
- EU Directive 2008/57/EC: Governs the interoperability of the EU rail system, with EN 14865-2 providing a means of demonstrating compliance for axlebox rolling bearings and lubricants.
- ICS 45.040 / ICS 75.100: These International Classification for Standards codes relate to railway materials and components, lubricants, and industrial oils.
By providing a reliable method for assessing the mechanical stability of axlebox lubricating greases, SIST EN 14865-2:2006/kFprA2:2010 plays a vital role in maintaining the safety and performance of railway vehicles across Europe. Implementing this standard helps to ensure compliance, reduce operational interruptions, and support interoperability within the European rail network.
