SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A2:2019
(Amendment)Eurocode 3 - Design of steel structures - Part 1-5: Plated structural elements
General Information
- Abstract
EN 1993-1-5 gives design requirements of stiffened and unstiffened plates which are subject to inplane forces. Effects due to shear lag, in-plane load introduction and plate buckling for I-section girders and box girders are covered. Also covered are plated structural components subject to in-plane loads as in tanks and silos. The effects of out-of-plane loading are outside the scope of this document.

Overview
SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A2:2019 is the Slovenian adoption of the European standard EN 1993-1-5:2006/A2:2019, a part of Eurocode 3 that outlines the design rules for plated structural elements in steel structures. Developed by the European Committee for Standardization (CEN), this amendment updates vital technical requirements for engineers and designers involved in the analysis, design, and construction of steel plate components subjected to in-plane forces.
The standard provides comprehensive guidance on the performance and safety criteria for both stiffened and unstiffened plates, focusing on aspects such as shear lag, in-plane force introduction, and plate buckling. These components are integral to structural systems like I-section girders, box girders, tanks, and silos. The standard does not address effects due to out-of-plane loading.
Key Topics
- Stiffened and Unstiffened Plates: Requirements for the design and assessment of both stiffened (using longitudinal or transverse stiffeners) and unstiffened plates under in-plane loads.
- Shear Lag: Guidelines for accounting for the reduction in effective width due to non-uniform stress distribution across flanges or plates.
- In-Plane Force Introduction: Procedures to evaluate how in-plane forces are introduced and distributed in plate elements, ensuring safety under design loading conditions.
- Plate Buckling: Rules to assess and mitigate the risk of local and global buckling in plate structures subject to compressive or shear forces.
- Application to Structural Components: Application of design rules to typical steel elements such as I-section girders, box girders, and to plates in tanks and silos.
- Elastic Critical Plate Buckling Stress: Updates on the calculation of the elastic critical plate buckling stress (σ_cr,p) without consideration of the torsional stiffness of closed section stiffeners.
Applications
SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A2:2019 is essential for a wide range of civil engineering and construction projects where steel plated elements are deployed. Its applications include:
- Building Structures: Design of floor systems, roofs, and facades using steel plates to achieve optimal strength and efficiency.
- Bridges and Infrastructure: Engineering of I-section and box-section girders for highway and railway bridges, where plate buckling and shear lag can critically influence performance.
- Industrial Facilities: Structural design of tanks, silos, and containment units frequently used in process, storage, and manufacturing industries.
- Tank and Silo Construction: Ensuring stability and load resistance of circular and rectangular tanks or silos subjected to in-plane pressures.
- Retrofitting and Strengthening: Assessment and upgrading of existing steel structures to meet current safety standards regarding plate behaviour.
The standard supports compliance with European and Slovenian regulatory requirements, facilitating international project collaboration and enhancing structural safety.
Related Standards
For a holistic approach to the design of steel structures, consideration should also be given to related Eurocode standards, including:
- EN 1993-1-1: General rules and rules for buildings
- EN 1993-1-8: Design of joints
- EN 1993-1-6: Strength and stability of shells
- EN 1991 Series: Actions on structures
- EN 1994 Series: Composite steel and concrete structures
Summary
SIST EN 1993-1-5:2007/A2:2019 is a critical standard for engineers and designers working on steel structures involving plated elements. By following its requirements for stiffened and unstiffened plates, in-plane force application, and buckling, professionals can ensure the reliability, safety, and compliance of their steel construction projects. This Eurocode amendment remains a cornerstone in European and international steel design practice, supported by a comprehensive suite of related standards.
