Overview
SIST EN 62841-2-8:2016/oprAB:2024 is a European draft amendment developed by CLC/TC 116 under CENELEC. It specifies safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, including shears and nibblers used in various industries and garden applications. This standard serves as an essential reference for manufacturers, suppliers, and users to ensure compliance with crucial safety regulations, particularly those related to the Machinery Directive 2006/42/EC.
The amendment focuses on improving user protection when operating hand-held electric shears and nibblers, with updates that clarify specific safety aspects, especially for cordless tools with integrated battery packs. It also introduces new requirements regarding isolation and disabling devices to prevent unintentional tool activation and to mitigate risks during servicing or maintenance.
Key Topics
Essential Safety Requirements
The amendment addresses risks related to mechanical, electrical, and ergonomic hazards by prescribing practical protective measures for electric hand-held shears and nibblers.Battery Tool Safety
Special emphasis is placed on tools with integral batteries, requiring either an isolation or disabling device to:- Prevent accidental start-up
- Ensure safe maintenance procedures
- Protect against unintended reconnection
Control and Lock-Off Systems
Updates clarify that tools must have controls preventing unintended operation, such as:- Dual-action lock-off devices
- Removable disables, impossible to override with a single gesture
Compliance with EU Directives
The document shows conformity with essential safety requirements from Annex I of the Machinery Directive, reinforcing presumption of compliance for products placed on the European market.
Applications
SIST EN 62841-2-8:2016/oprAB:2024 is applicable to a broad range of workplaces and sectors, including:
Manufacturing and Fabrication
- Safe operation of power tools for cutting and shaping sheet metal or other materials using hand-held shears and nibblers
Construction and Renovation
- Use of portable tools to efficiently and safely trim metalwork on job sites
Landscaping and Gardening
- Trimming and maintaining garden structures with electric shears, while minimizing potential hazards
Maintenance and Repair
- Ensuring tools can be disabled during service, reducing risks to personnel
For manufacturers, this standard is crucial for product development, CE marking, and access to the European market. For employers and operators, it is key in selecting compliant, safe equipment and supporting workplace safety policies.
