Overview
SIST EN IEC 60704-2-19:2026 defines the test code for determining airborne acoustical noise emitted by stationary, freestanding, and wall-mounted air cleaners intended for household and similar applications. Developed and maintained by CLC (CENELEC), this European Standard specifies particular requirements to ensure reliable, reproducible, and comparable noise measurement results for air cleaning appliances. It covers appliances powered by mains, d.c. voltage not exceeding 48 V, or batteries, including combination products with integrated functions such as humidification-when tested exclusively for air cleaning.
This standard is intended to be used in conjunction with IEC 60704-1:2021, which provides general requirements for noise testing of household and similar electrical appliances.
Key Topics
Scope and Applicability
SIST EN IEC 60704-2-19:2026 applies to air cleaners used in homes, offices, hotels, hospitals, shops, and similar environments. It excludes fresh-air air cleaners connected to the outdoor environment and any product that autonomously relocates during operation.Test Environment and Measurement Methods
- Defines test environments including reverberation rooms, hard-walled test rooms, and free-field conditions over a reflecting plane.
- Specifies the use of precision instrumentation and standardized setup procedures for accurate sound pressure level measurement.
- Addresses specific conditions for the operation of air cleaners, ensuring measurements reflect typical usage.
Operational Modes and Test Procedures
- Detailed requirements for appliance setup, including filter condition, battery state, and pre-conditioning before tests.
- Measurement is performed with the air cleaner in its maximum performance operation mode, with all non-air cleaning functions (e.g., heating, humidification) deactivated.
- Includes considerations for manual and automatic operation modes, and additional procedures for appliances with oscillating components.
Data Reporting and Reproducibility
- Standardizes the information to be recorded and reported, supporting the declaration and verification of noise emission values under real-world conditions.
- Specifies statistical requirements for repeatability and reproducibility, ensuring confidence in published data.
Applications
SIST EN IEC 60704-2-19:2026 is essential for manufacturers, testing laboratories, consumer organizations, and regulatory authorities involved in:
Product Development and Quality Assurance
- Ensuring air cleaners meet market and regulatory noise emission requirements.
- Guiding design improvements for quieter operation.
Performance Declaration and Labelling
- Providing standardized noise emission data for inclusion in product specifications and energy labels.
- Supporting compliance with eco-design and consumer information regulations.
Market Surveillance and Compliance Testing
- Enabling consistent assessment of products in the marketplace.
- Supporting verification of manufacturer claims during audits or in response to consumer complaints.
Purchasing and Procurement
- Allowing commercial and institutional buyers to compare air cleaners based on reliable noise data, thus improving workplace and household environmental comfort.

FOREWORD
1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
misinterpretation by any end user.
4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
services carried out by independent certification bodies.
6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
