Overview
prEN IEC 62841-2-25:2024/prAA:2025 is a draft European Standard developed by the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CENELEC). This standard specifies particular safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held chain beam saws, which are widely used in woodworking, construction, and related industries. The document acts as an amendment to the broader IEC 62841-2-25 series, focusing on the unique risks and technical considerations associated with portable power tools and saws, especially those designed to cut beams.
The standard has been prepared by CLC/TC 116, targeting both product manufacturers and regulatory bodies to ensure consistent safety practices in the design, production, and maintenance of these tools across Europe.
Key Topics
The document addresses several core areas essential for safety and regulatory compliance of hand-held chain beam saws:
- Measurement of Noise and Vibration Emissions: Revised requirements for testing and reporting noise and vibration levels to improve operator protection and inform risk assessment.
- Battery Tool and Battery Pack Requirements: Updates to specific clauses concerning battery-powered chain beam saws, ensuring the safe performance and maintenance of battery systems.
- Normative and Informative References: Introduction of cross-references to relevant international and European standards, ensuring alignment with the latest safety principles and harmonized approaches.
- Product Marking and Instructions: Guidance for manufacturers on providing necessary information, warnings, and user instructions for safe operation.
- Conformity with EU Legislation:
- Covers essential safety requirements detailed in Directive 2006/42/EC (Machinery Directive).
- Supports compliance with Regulation (EU) 2023/1230 concerning machinery and safety.
Applications
This standard applies to a range of electric motor-operated hand-held chain beam saws, primarily used in:
- Woodworking and Timber Construction: Ensuring the safe cutting of beams and large wooden materials at construction sites and workshops.
- Building and Renovation: Supporting professional tradespeople in structural modifications, framing, and carpentry tasks.
- Transportable Power Tools: Covering battery-driven and corded chain beam saws for added flexibility in diverse working environments.
- Lawn and Garden Machinery: Where applicable, guiding the safe integration of similar cutting mechanisms in outdoor power equipment.
By implementing the requirements of prEN IEC 62841-2-25:2024/prAA:2025, manufacturers can demonstrate a presumption of conformity with European legislation, minimize workplace accidents, and enhance the market acceptance for their products.
Related Standards
The following standards are closely related and referenced within the document for ensuring holistic safety and interoperability:
- EN 62841-1:2015: General requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery.
- EN 62841-1:2015/A11:2022 and A1:2025: Amendments to the base standard, incorporating the latest technical updates.
- ISO 630-2:2021: Technical delivery conditions for structural steels, relevant for tools designed to cut steel-reinforced materials.
- EN ISO 12100:2010: Safety of machinery - General principles for design and risk assessment.
- Directive 2006/42/EC: Machinery Directive, covering the essential safety and health requirements for machinery in the EU.
- Regulation (EU) 2023/1230: Latest Machinery Regulation, supporting conformity and safe market access for electrical tools within the European Union.
Implementing prEN IEC 62841-2-25:2024/prAA:2025 is vital for manufacturers, importers, and end-users of chain beam saws to maintain safety, fulfill legal obligations, and enable safe, efficient operations on-site. This standard provides a structured approach to risk mitigation and product quality in the sector of electric hand-held and transportable tools.
