Overview

SIST EN 300 019-2-4 V2.1.2:2006 specifies the environmental conditions and testing methods for telecommunications equipment installed in stationary, non-weatherprotected locations. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST), this standard is identical to ETSI EN 300 019-2-4 and plays a critical role in ensuring the reliability and durability of telecom equipment subject to environmental stress outside of weatherprotected environments.

The document establishes a framework for the verification of equipment resistibility according to defined environmental classes. These classes and associated test methods support manufacturers, system integrators, and operators in demonstrating compliance, enhancing product robustness, and ensuring continual service in challenging deployment scenarios.

Key Topics

  • Environmental Test Categories

    • Addresses climatic, mechanical, chemical, and biological environmental factors commonly encountered at non-weatherprotected sites.
    • Specifies broad test severities and procedures such as temperature extremes, humidity, vibration, shock, dust, and chemical exposure.
  • Climatic Stress Testing

    • Involves thermal cycling, exposure to low and high air temperatures, and variation in relative and absolute humidity.
    • Includes testing for condensation, rain intensity, solar radiation, and other weather-related influences that can occur indoors but outside weatherprotected zones.
  • Mechanical and Seismic Testing

    • Prescribes vibration and shock tests to simulate real-world mechanical stresses.
    • Defines additional requirements for earthquake resistance where specified by the customer.
  • Special Chemical and Biological Factors

    • Recognizes the presence of corrosive substances, dust, flora, and fauna that might impact telecommunications equipment at open or semi-open sites.
  • Test Performance Criteria

    • Emphasizes the need to define operational states and performance requirements before, during, and after test cycles in product specifications.

Applications

SIST EN 300 019-2-4 is essential wherever telecommunications equipment is installed in stationary positions at locations not fully shielded from environmental variability, such as:

  • Indoor utility rooms with open access or garages not protected against direct weather
  • Sheltered but unsealed spaces in industrial sites or transport hubs
  • Areas subject to condensation, pollution, dust, vibration, or occasional flooding
  • Non-weatherprotected cabinets and communication shelters

Practical benefits of adhering to this standard include:

  • Enhanced equipment durability and reduced risk of failure in harsh or variable conditions
  • Greater confidence for operators and clients concerning system uptime and service continuity
  • Simplified product acceptance procedures for equipment procured or deployed in diverse environments
  • A consistent reference for contract specification and technical tendering in the telecommunications sector

Related Standards

  • ETS 300 019-1-4: Provides the classification of environmental conditions for stationary use at non-weatherprotected locations - referenced for defining environmental classes.
  • ETS 300 019-2-0: Contains the general overview and introduction to environmental testing methodologies for telecom equipment.
  • IEC 60068-2: Identifies key environmental test methods including cold, dry heat, damp heat, vibration, and shock, which are directly referenced in PART 2-4.
  • IEC 60721-3-4: Details the classification of environmental parameters and their severities for stationary equipment in non-weatherprotected environments.

By referencing and adhering to these interconnected standards, organizations demonstrate a commitment to quality, reliability, and international best practices in telecommunications infrastructure deployment.
