Overview
SIST EN 1995-1-1:2005/A1:2008 – Eurocode 5: Design of Timber Structures – Part 1-1: General – Common Rules and Rules for Buildings is the harmonized European standard for designing timber structures, incorporating both general requirements and specific rules for buildings. Published by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and based on EN 1995-1-1:2004/A1:2008, this document ensures uniformity and safety in the structural use of timber across the European Union.
Eurocode 5 provides a unified set of guidelines for the design, calculation, and construction of wooden structures, ensuring that projects meet essential criteria for strength, durability, and serviceability. The standard references key European and international publications, including material specifications, structural calculation methods, and testing procedures to ensure best practices in the timber engineering sector.
Key Topics
SIST EN 1995-1-1:2005/A1:2008 covers several foundational areas in the design of timber structures:
- Normative references: Incorporates dated and undated standards for materials, methods, and product performance.
- Design working life and durability: Requirements for service life and resistance to environmental effects.
- Ultimate and serviceability limit states: Guidelines to ensure structures remain safe under all loading and environmental conditions.
- Material strength classes: Reference to strength grading for timber, glued-laminated timber (glulam), laminated veneer lumber (LVL), plywood, OSB, and other wood-based products.
- Structural elements and connections: Rules for beams, columns, and walls; detailed requirements for dowel-type fasteners, nails, bolts, staples, and screws, including spacing, end and edge distances.
- Testing methods: Application of relevant test standards for mechanical properties, joint strength, and structural performance.
- Preservative treatment and durability classes: Classification and performance standards for treated and untreated wood products, addressing biological attack and environmental exposure.
Applications
Eurocode 5 is designed for professionals involved in the design, engineering, and construction of timber buildings and other structures, offering practical value in:
- Building design and construction: Ensuring compliance with safety, durability, and regulatory requirements in residential, commercial, and industrial timber structures.
- Structural engineering: Providing clear calculation rules for serviceability and ultimate limits, allowing for optimized and efficient timber structure designs.
- Product specification and procurement: Guiding architects, engineers, and builders in selecting suitable timber and fasteners according to standardized classifications and test methods.
- Assessment and retrofitting: Supporting the evaluation of existing timber structures and the design of repairs or reinforcements that meet current standards.
By adhering to these common rules, construction professionals in Slovenia and across Europe can ensure their timber structures are safe, reliable, and fit for purpose.
Related Standards
SIST EN 1995-1-1:2005/A1:2008 directly references and utilizes a range of related European and international standards, including:
- EN 14081-1: Strength graded structural timber
- EN 14080: Glued laminated timber requirements
- EN 636: Plywood specifications
- EN 14592: Timber fasteners – general requirements
- EN 13986: Wood-based panels for use in construction
- EN 1990: Eurocode – Basis of structural design
- EN 1991 series: Actions on structures (wind, snow, thermal, etc.)
- ISO 2081: Metallic coatings for fasteners
- ISO 2631-2: Human exposure to whole-body vibration in buildings
Using these standards in conjunction guarantees that timber structures are engineered for optimal performance and long-term durability within the broader Eurocode system.
Eurocode 5 is essential for all stakeholders seeking compliance, safety, sustainability, and quality in timber construction across Europe.
