Overview
kSIST FprEN 12875-1:2026: Mechanical Dishwashing Resistance of Utensils – Part 1: Reference Test Method for Domestic Articles is a European standard developed by CEN Technical Committee CEN/TC 194. This standard defines a reference test method for evaluating the resistance of various domestic utensils and articles to the mechanical, chemical, and thermal stresses encountered during dishwashing in domestic dishwashers.
The standard covers a wide range of materials, including ceramic, glass, glass ceramic, decorated glass, plastics, rubber, silicones, metal, mineral-based, and plant-based products, including coated or enamelled items. The method assesses the durability of these articles throughout repeated dishwashing cycles and aims to provide a benchmark for manufacturers, laboratories, and regulatory bodies.
Key Topics
- Reference Test Method: The document specifies detailed procedures for conducting standardized dishwashing tests, including water quality, detergent and rinse agent specification, dishwasher features, and sample preparation.
- Material Scope: Applies to domestic articles made from ceramic, glass, glass ceramic, decorated glass, vitreous enamel, coatings, rubber, silicones, metal, plastics, and other related materials.
- Combined Stresses: Evaluates article resistance to mechanical, thermal, and chemical stresses present in domestic dishwashers.
- Test Cycles: Specifies the conditions for repeated dishwashing cycles, ensuring consistent and reproducible test results. The minimum number of test cycles required is established in EN 12875-2.
- Test Reporting: Details mandatory information for test reports, including sample identification, water hardness, test results, and any unusual observations.

Introduction
This document specifies a test method for the determination of the mechanical dishwashing resistance of
domestic articles. The results obtained according to this document are intended to serve for comparison
purposes for the dishwashing resistance of the different domestic articles and give an indication of
resistance only under the standard conditions of this test.
The dishwasher test method described in this document is both time consuming and expensive. However,
no single accelerated and inexpensive test is available which gives comparable results to the dishwasher
test for the whole variety of utensils made of various materials which are cleaned in dishwashers. The
test method described here is intended to be used as a reference method for dishwashing resistance.
Accelerated test methods may be used instead of the reference test method provided that valid
comparison to the dishwasher test is shown.
Consideration should be given to the normal use of each type of domestic article and its normal frequency
of mechanical dishwashing.
Further parts of EN 12875, under the general title Mechanical dishwashing resistance of utensils are as
follows:
— Part 2: Inspection and evaluation
— Part 4: Rapid test for domestic ceramic articles
— Part 5: Rapid test for ceramic catering articles
