Overview

SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 specifies standardized methods for the measurement of overall system performance in terrestrial digital microwave radio-relay systems. This standard is crucial for factory acceptance tests and type approval tests, focusing on a complete simulated radio-relay system after individual system components have been evaluated. These measurement methods ensure reliability, interoperability, and regulatory compliance of radio-relay equipment used in point-to-point digital microwave communication networks.

Key Topics

  • Bit-Error Ratio (BER): Procedures are outlined for measuring BER in various conditions:
    • Receiver input level dependency
    • Residual BER at nominal receiver input
    • BER degradation from multi-channel and multipath interference
  • Jitter: Methods to assess jitter, an indicator of signal timing variations, both cumulatively over multi-hop systems and per individual hop.
  • Acceptable Input Interruption: Evaluates the system’s robustness to signal interruptions over both single and multi-hop links.
  • Protection Switching Operation: Verification of automatic switching functionality in case of system faults or degradations.

Testing considers cumulative effects across all radio hops and assesses parameters under typical, real-world operational conditions, including multi-channel environments and the presence of interference or fading.

Applications

SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 is applied in the following scenarios:

  • Factory Acceptance Tests: Ensures that newly manufactured digital microwave radio-relay systems meet performance criteria before deployment.
  • Type Approval: Supports regulatory and certification processes by offering objective measurement criteria for system approval.
  • System Validation: Enables operators and manufacturers to assess the end-to-end functionality and robustness of radio-relay systems in simulated full-system configurations.
  • Multi-Hop and Multi-Channel Analysis: Provides essential tools for analyzing cumulative performance effects in complex network architectures, including assessment under interference and multipath propagation conditions.

By using these standardized measurement methods, organizations can verify system performance, reduce operational risks, and ensure optimal reliability of critical communication links.

Related Standards

SIST EN 60835-2-10:2002 references and aligns with several important international standards for digital microwave and radio-relay systems:

  • IEC 835-1-4: Measurement methods common to terrestrial radio-relay and satellite earth stations, focusing on transmission performance.
  • IEC 835-2-4: Measurements on transmitter/receiver, including modulator/demodulator subsystems.
  • IEC 835-2-6: Measurement of protective switching operations.
  • IEC 835-2-8: Evaluation of adaptive equalizer performance.
  • CCIR Report 930-2: Performance objectives for digital radio-relay systems.

These related standards foster interoperability and consistency across digital microwave radio equipment and support robust, high-performance terrestrial radio-relay communications.

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a world-wide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non -governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on

possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical

reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
International Standard IEC 835-2-10 has been prepared by sub-committee 12E: Radio

INTRODUCTION
In previous sections of IEC 835-2 measurement methods for parameters of the digital
radio-relay system have been discussed separately for each part of the system.
In addition to these tests, the overall performance of a complete simulated system should
be tested.
The tests cover the two basic parameters of digital transmission systems, bit-error ratio
and jitter, as well as the acceptable input interruption and verification of the protection
switching operation, which are all affected by the presence of more than one radio channel
and/or radio hop. The measurement of other additional parameters such as error-free
seconds, burst-error ratio, block-error ratio, which remain under consideration by other
international organizations, may also be required.

Part 2: Measurements on terrestrial radio-relay systems
Section Ten — Overall system performance
1 Scope
This section IEC 835-2 deals with measurements to be carried out during factory
acceptance tests and type approval tests on a complete simulated digital radio-relay
system, following tests on the individual parts of the system.
In the following, it will be stated for each parameter whether or not a multi-hop measure-
ment is required in the overall system performance test, depending on the cumulative or
non-cumulative property of that parameter. In this section, the emphasis is on the system
configuration. For methods of measurement, see under the appropriate future sections of
IEC 835-1 and IEC 835-2.

were valid. All standards are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this
section of IEC 835-2 are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most re-
cent editions of the standards indicated below. Members of IEC and ISO maintain regis-
