Overview

SIST EN 60835-3-4:2002 defines standardized methods for measuring the performance of low-noise amplifiers (LNAs) used in satellite earth station equipment operating within digital microwave radio transmission systems. Prepared in alignment with IEC 60835-3-4:1993, this standard helps ensure accuracy, repeatability, and comparability of LNA measurement results across international satellite communications infrastructure.

LNAs play a crucial role in amplifying weak signals received from satellites, enabling reliable communication in radio relay and fixed satellite communication systems. Consistent measurement of their performance parameters supports quality assurance, system interoperability, and regulatory compliance.

Key Topics

SIST EN 60835-3-4:2002 covers essential measurement methods for low-noise amplifiers, including:

  • Noise Temperature: Procedures for measuring the noise temperature of LNAs, considering contributions from associated sub-systems.
  • Gain and Gain Stability: Determination of gain values and monitoring of short-term and long-term gain stability over specified periods.
  • Amplitude and Group Delay/Frequency Characteristics: Evaluation of how gain amplitude and group delay vary with frequency.
  • Input/Output Level Characteristics: Measurement of output as a function of input signal to analyze gain compression and operating range.
  • Input and Output Return Loss: Assessment of signal reflection parameters at LNA ports to ensure impedance matching.
  • Effects of Out-of-Band Signals: Evaluation of how signals outside the desired frequency band impact gain compression and noise temperature.
  • Intermodulation Products: Methods to measure unwanted signal products generated by the amplifier due to nonlinearities.

Each test references appropriate sections in IEC 835-1-2 and IEC 835-1-3 for base procedures and ensures reliable characterization within minimum system disturbance.

Applications

SIST EN 60835-3-4:2002 is directly applicable to organizations involved in the design, testing, integration, and operation of satellite earth stations, particularly:

  • Telecommunications providers deploying or upgrading satellite earth stations benefit from standardized LNA measurement, leading to improved signal reliability and system performance.
  • Manufacturers and test laboratories use consistent test methods for product development, quality control, and type approval.
  • System integrators
    • Verify performance claims from equipment suppliers.
    • Ensure that LNAs meet required technical and regulatory specifications.
  • Regulatory authorities and accreditation bodies reference these standardized methods to ensure industry compliance and promote interoperability across national and international networks.

Documented test procedures support the reliable establishment of performance baselines, troubleshooting of system anomalies, and validation of upgraded LNA technologies.

Related Standards

SIST EN 60835-3-4:2002 is part of a broader series for digital microwave radio transmission systems. Related international and European standards include:

  • EN 60835-1-2: Measurements common to terrestrial radio-relay systems and satellite earth stations - Basic characteristics
  • EN 60835-1-3: Measurements common to terrestrial radio-relay systems and satellite earth stations - Transmission characteristics
  • EN 60835-3: Measurements on satellite earth stations (series level)
  • IEC 60835-3-4: International equivalent for LNA measurement procedures
  • ICS 33.060.30: Classification for radio relay and fixed satellite communications systems

FOREWORD
1)
The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization
comprising all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to
promote international cooperation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and
electronic fields. To this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards.
Their preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in
the subject dealt with may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and
non-governmental organizations liaising with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC
collaborates closely with the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with
conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters, prepared by technical committees on
which all the National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as
possible, an international consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
3)
They have the form of recommendations for international use published in the form of standards, technical
reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
