Overview

SIST EN 60835-2-3:2002 specifies standardized methods for measuring performance characteristics of RF branching networks used in digital microwave radio transmission systems, with a particular focus on terrestrial radio-relay systems. Developed by the Slovenian Institute for Standardization (SIST) and aligned with IEC 60835-2-3, this standard establishes procedures to ensure reliable and consistent evaluation of RF branching assemblies, which play a critical role in connecting multiple transmitters and receivers to a common antenna system.

Key Topics

The standard addresses a variety of important measurement parameters for RF branching networks in digital radio-relay infrastructures, including:

  • Return Loss: Determining how much signal is reflected back toward the source, measured as a function of frequency within each port’s pass-band.
  • Insertion Loss: Evaluating the signal attenuation introduced by the branching network between transmitters/receivers and the antenna system, at relevant frequencies.
  • Amplitude/Frequency and Group-Delay/Frequency Characteristics: Analyzing how signal amplitude and propagation delay vary across the operating frequency range.
  • Isolation: Measuring unwanted signal leakage between different transmit and receive ports, which is essential for minimizing crosstalk and interference.
  • Multi-Carrier Intermodulation Products: Assessing the creation of unwanted intermodulation signals when multiple transmitters operate in the same branching network, particularly focusing on non-linearities that may result in interference within the receive bands.

These measurement procedures ensure RF branching networks meet quality, performance, and interference mitigation requirements critical for digital microwave communications.

Applications

The guidelines in SIST EN 60835-2-3:2002 are widely applied in the design, manufacturing, and verification of equipment used in:

  • Terrestrial Digital Microwave Radio Networks: Ensuring robust signal transmission among multiple radio transmitters and receivers fed through a shared antenna system.
  • Radio-Relay Systems: Supporting high-reliability point-to-point and point-to-multipoint communications in telecom infrastructure.
  • RF Equipment Testing and Type Approval: Providing consistent methodologies for laboratory testing, equipment validation, and conformity assessment.
  • Troubleshooting and Performance Optimization: Assisting engineers in diagnosing performance issues related to signal loss, isolation, or intermodulation interference within radio-relay branching networks.

Organizations involved in the deployment or maintenance of digital microwave links utilize this standard to guarantee optimal system operation, reduce risk of interference, and streamline network expansion or upgrades.

Related Standards

SIST EN 60835-2-3:2002 is closely related to other standards that define measurement procedures and performance criteria for digital microwave radio transmission equipment:

  • IEC 60835-1-2: Methods of measurement for equipment used in digital microwave radio transmission systems – Basic characteristics.
  • IEC 60835-1-3: Methods of measurement – Transmission characteristics for both terrestrial radio-relay systems and satellite earth stations.
  • EN 60835-2-3: European adoption of the IEC standard for RF branching network measurements.

By following SIST EN 60835-2-3:2002 in conjunction with these related standards, professionals across the telecommunications sector foster reliable, interference-free digital radio-relay systems, ensuring high-quality wireless communication services.

1 Scope
This section of IEC 835-2 deals with methods of measurement for branching networks
used in digital radio-relay systems.
2 Definition and general considerations
A branching network is a multi-port network which provides the means to connect several
transmitters and receivers, operating at different frequencies, to a common antenna
feeder. An example of a branching network is shown in figure 1, where it will be seen that
the network is made up of a transmit branching assembly, a receive branching assembly,
and a transmit-receive coupler. The paths from T
n to C and from C to R n have pass-
band and stop-band characteristics, and usually need unidirec
