Overview

EN 14187-3:2017 specifies a laboratory test method to determine the self-levelling properties of cold applied joint sealants (normal and fuel resistant) intended for concrete pavements in roads, airfields and other trafficked areas. It is part of the EN 14187 series on cold applied joint sealants and is used to assess how a sealant flows and levels in service-like conditions.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Scope: Test method for self-levelling behaviour of cold applied joint sealants for concrete pavements (including fuel resistant types).
  • Test principle: Pour sealant into a channel mould and measure surface profile after curing to quantify deviation caused by flow or lack of levelling.
  • Apparatus:
    • Mixing baker (polyethylene, 250 ml)
    • Flat bladed spatula
    • Mould: channel 20 ±1 mm wide × 25 ±1 mm deep × 300 ±1 mm long (metal or plastic, 1–2 mm thick)
    • Wedges/spirit level for horizontal and 2.5 % slope positioning
    • Micrometer (100 µm resolution, ratchet) or equivalent measuring device
  • Conditioning: Equipment and samples conditioned 16–24 h at test temperature:
    • Horizontal test at (5 ± 2) °C
    • Inclined test at (23 ± 2) °C
  • Procedure highlights:
    • Horizontal mould test: single continuous pour (30 s) from 70–100 mm height, cure 48 h at (5 ± 2) °C, measure depths at centre and multiple offsets, report difference (nearest 0.5 mm).
    • Inclined mould test: overfill and strike off, cure 24 h at (23 ± 2) °C and 50 ± 5 % RH on a (2,5 ± 0,1) % slope, measure at specified points, report difference (nearest 0.5 mm).
  • Test report must include reference to EN 14187-3:2017, product name/type, batch, test results, deviations, and date.

Applications and users

This standard is practical for:

  • Manufacturers (product development and quality control)
  • Testing laboratories (type approval, comparative testing)
  • Road and airfield authorities (specification and acceptance testing)
  • Contractors and pavement engineers (selection of sealants for expansion joints)
  • Procurement/spec writers requiring verified self-levelling performance

Using EN 14187-3 helps ensure consistent sealant selection, reliable joint performance, and compliance with specification requirements for trafficked concrete pavements.

Related standards

EN 14187 is a multi-part series. Relevant parts include:

  • EN 14187-1: Determination of rate of cure
  • EN 14187-2: Determination of tack free time
  • EN 14187-4 to -9: Tests for fuel/chemical immersion, hydrolysis, adhesion/cohesion, flame resistance, UV weathering and function testing
