General Information

Abstract

This European Standard specifies the design, dimensions, technical requirements and testing of connections for the discharge of oily mixture produced by inland navigation vessels.
It is not applicable to the disposal of cargo residues from cargo tanks.
This standard specifies:
-   a connection of a design common on inland navigation vessels which consists of a threaded pipe and quick-release coupling;
-   a connection for vessels with flange ISO 7608 - A1, consisting of an adapter with matching flange and welded threaded pipe and quick-release coupling.

Overview

EN 1305:2018 - "Inland navigation vessels - Connections for the discharge of oily mixture" is a CEN European Standard that specifies the design, dimensions, technical requirements and testing of connections used to discharge oily mixture from inland navigation vessels. It covers two common connection forms:

  • Design R: threaded pipe with quick‑release coupling permanently installed on the vessel;
  • Design F: adapter with ISO 7608 – A1 flange and welded threaded pipe with quick‑release coupling.

The standard is not applicable to disposal of cargo residues from cargo tanks and supersedes EN 1305:1996.

Key topics and technical requirements

  • Connection type and components
    • Quick‑release coupling with nominal diameter DN 50 (as per EN 14420-6).
    • Pipe with threaded neck, adapter (flange ISO 7608 – A1) and blanking cap with chain.
  • Dimensions and configuration
    • Coupling and adapter geometry to avoid spillage on disconnection.
    • Hose compatibility: design must allow a hose with 1 500 mm bend radius to be connected easily.
    • Operational clearance: minimum 175 mm radius and 60 mm depth behind the coupling for operation.
  • Materials
    • Pipes and adapters: steel (manufacturer to select suitable grade).
    • Coupling bodies: brass (CuZn39Pb3 CW614N or CuZn40Pb2 CW617N) per EN 12420.
    • Blanking caps: wrought aluminium EN AW-6106 (EN 573-3).
  • Testing, designation and marking
    • Acceptance by visual inspection and measurement.
    • Designation example: “Connection EN 1305 - R”.
    • Permanent marking: brown paint on pipe neck and nearby sign “Discharge connection for oily mixture EN 1305” (min. 7 mm font).
  • Installation
    • Protect connections from damage and ensure they do not restrict adjacent walkways.

Applications and who uses it

EN 1305:2018 is used by professionals involved in inland vessel equipment, safety and environmental compliance:

  • Shipbuilders and naval architects specifying bilge and oily discharge systems
  • Equipment manufacturers and coupling suppliers producing quick‑release couplings and adapters
  • Vessel operators, maintenance crews and port reception facilities for safe discharge operations
  • Classification societies and regulatory bodies assessing conformity with European standards

Practical benefits include standardized interfaces for safe, leak‑free discharge, easier maintenance and interoperability between vessels and shore suction equipment.
