a) l'évaluation de la performance d'une machine ;
b) l'évaluation des améliorations apportées à cette machine ;
c) la comparaison de machines dans des groupes de machines ayant la même utilisation normale (les groupes sont
définis par la fonction et les matériaux traités) ;
d) le classement des machines du même groupe en fonction de leur paramètre de concentration en polluant ;
e) la détermination de l'état de la technique pour ce qui concerne le paramètre de concentration en polluant
des machines.

Overview

SIST EN 1093-8:2000+A1:2008 is a European Standard developed by CEN that specifies a test bench method for measuring the pollutant concentration parameter of airborne hazardous substances emitted from machinery. This standard focuses on determining the concentration of emitted gases, vapours, and respirable particles under controlled conditions. The method is designed to evaluate the performance of machines regarding their emission of airborne hazardous substances, supporting regulatory compliance and the improvement of workplace safety.

Key Topics

  • Airborne Hazardous Substances: The standard addresses the evaluation of emitted substances, specifically gases, vapours, and respirable particles, which may pose health and safety risks in industrial environments.
  • Test Bench Methodology: Measurements are conducted using a standardized test bench, ensuring consistent operating conditions and reliable comparison across machines.
  • Pollutant Concentration Parameter: Defines how to determine the average concentration of a specified pollutant at designated measurement points near the machine.
  • Machine Evaluation: The procedure allows stakeholders to assess a machine’s emission performance, track improvements, and compare similar machines within a group.
  • Conformity with EU Directives: Supports compliance with the Essential Requirements of EU Machinery Directives 98/37/EC and 2006/42/EC regarding emission of hazardous substances.

Applications

The practical value of EN 1093-8 lies in its broad applicability across manufacturing and industrial settings where machinery may emit potentially harmful airborne substances. Key applications include:

  • Performance Evaluation: Machine manufacturers and users can quantitatively assess the pollutant emissions of equipment under specific conditions.
  • Product Development and Improvement: The standard enables engineers to measure and document improvements in emissions performance, encouraging safer, cleaner machinery.
  • Machine Comparison and Ranking: Operators and procurement teams can use the pollutant concentration parameter to compare different machines with similar functions and materials processed, aiding informed purchasing and operational decisions.
  • State-of-the-Art Assessment: Helps determine industry benchmarks for emission performance, supporting the identification of best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Regulatory Compliance: The standard is an effective tool for demonstrating conformity with EU requirements on hazardous emissions, supporting product certification and workplace safety audits.

Related Standards

In the context of emissions measurement and machine safety, several standards are closely associated with EN 1093-8:

  • EN 1093-1: Outlines general methods for evaluating emissions of airborne hazardous substances from machinery.
  • EN 1093-3: Details the determination of emission rate for specified pollutants using bench test methods.
  • ENV 1070: Provides essential terminology for machinery safety.
  • EN 292 (Parts 1 and 2): Addresses basic concepts and technical principles for machinery safety design.
  • ISO 2602: Describes statistical interpretation of test results, including estimation of means and confidence intervals.

Aligning with these standards ensures a comprehensive approach to managing machinery hazards, emission control, and occupational health.
