Overview

SIST EN 60335-2-21:2022/A1:2022 is a European Standard published by CLC that specifies the safety requirements for electric storage water heaters intended for household and similar uses. These appliances, designed for heating water below boiling temperature, must have a rated voltage not exceeding 250 V for single-phase appliances and 480 V for others. This amendment (A1:2021) aligns with relevant EU directives, ensuring manufacturers and suppliers meet essential safety objectives. The standard is harmonized under the Low Voltage Directive (2014/35/EU), supporting the safe design, manufacture, and assessment of storage water heaters.

Key Topics

  • Safety Requirements: The standard addresses risks associated with electric storage water heaters, including electric shock, overheating, fire hazards, and accessibility of hot surfaces.
  • Temperature Regulation: Guidance is provided for measuring and managing temperature rises of accessible external surfaces, minimizing burn risks.
  • Testing Methods: The amendment introduces detailed procedures for surface temperature measurement using standardized probes and thermocouples.
  • Compliance with EU Legislation: Prescribes requirements that, when met, support presumption of conformity with the Low Voltage Directive.
  • Applicable Voltages: Covers appliances with voltage ratings up to 250 V (single-phase) or 480 V (other types).

Applications

The SIST EN 60335-2-21:2022/A1:2022 standard is essential for:

  • Manufacturers of electric storage water heaters seeking CE marking and access to the European market.
  • Product Designers & Engineers who need to develop appliances that are safe for installation and use in homes, hotels, and similar environments.
  • Testing Laboratories conducting conformity assessments and certification of electric water heating appliances.
  • Regulatory Authorities responsible for verifying product safety and market surveillance compliance.

Practical applications include:

  • Ensuring household storage water heaters prevent accidental contact with excessively hot surfaces.
  • Assuring that appliances meet harmonized health and safety criteria for electrical equipment.
  • Supporting design improvements, enabling safer water heater installation and use by end-users.
  • Facilitating reliable testing and documentation during product development and pre-market approval.

Related Standards

SIST EN 60335-2-21:2022/A1:2022 references and builds upon several key standards:

  • EN 60335-1: General requirements for the safety of household and similar electrical appliances.
  • IEC 60335-2-21 / IEC 60335-2-21:2012/A1:2018: International base documents on storage water heater safety.
  • IEC 60584-1 / EN 60584-1: Specifies EMF characteristics and tolerances for thermocouples used in temperature measurement.
  • Directive 2014/35/EU (Low Voltage Directive): Sets out essential safety objectives for electrical equipment in the EU.

Practical Value

By adhering to this European Standard and its amendment, manufacturers and suppliers can:

  • Demonstrate compliance with EU safety regulations.
  • Reduce liability risks by following harmonized safety guidelines.
  • Enhance product trust and marketability within Europe.
  • Ensure products are designed, tested, and documented according to best practices for domestic electrical appliance safety.
  • Facilitate access to up-to-date safety requirements as referenced in the Official Journal of the European Union.

Adoption of SIST EN 60335-2-21:2022/A1:2022 thus ensures safer and more reliable storage water heater products, providing clear processes for temperature measurement, compliance, and ongoing market access.
