Overview
SIST EN 17816:2024 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies reference methods for determining key physical and chemical properties and specific contaminants in liming materials. Liming materials, which contain oxides, hydroxides, carbonates, or silicates of calcium (Ca) and/or magnesium (Mg), are mainly used to correct soil acidity and are classified as PFC 2 under Regulation (EU) 2019/1009. This standard ensures effective quality control for liming materials placed on the market, supporting compliance with essential safety and performance requirements.
The standard applies to single-component liming materials and does not cover fertilizing product blends (PFC 7) or methods for certain contaminants and properties, which are addressed in other European standards.
Key Topics
Physical and Chemical Property Determination
- Neutralizing Value: Measurement of the ability to neutralize soil acidity, ensuring product effectiveness.
- Reactivity: Assessment of how quickly the liming material acts in the soil.
- Grain Size (Granulometry): Determination of particle size distribution, impacting spreadability and soil reactivity.
- Total Calcium Oxide (CaO) Content: Quantification of calcium levels for efficacy.
- Total Magnesium Oxide (MgO) Content: Measurement of magnesium, relevant for specific soil and crop requirements.
Contaminant Analysis
- Cadmium Content
- Chromium VI and Total Chromium Content
- Mercury Content
- Nickel Content
- Lead Content
- Arsenic Content
These tests are essential for assessing product safety, in line with EU regulations on limiting harmful substances in fertilizers.
Applications
SIST EN 17816:2024 provides practical value for several stakeholders:
- Manufacturers of Liming Materials: Assists in demonstrating compliance with EU safety and performance regulations, supports quality control, and helps in mandatory product labelling.
- Regulatory Authorities: Used for conformity assessment related to Regulation (EU) 2019/1009, ensuring that only safe and compliant fertilizing products enter the EU market.
- Agricultural Producers and Soil Consultants: Offers reliable information on product composition and safety, supporting well-informed decisions for soil management and crop health.
- Testing Laboratories: Supplies standardized analytical methods for determining the required properties and contaminants, promoting consistency across the EU.
The standard aligns with EU harmonization requirements, providing a clear route for presumption of conformity when reference is made in the Official Journal of the European Union.
Related Standards
SIST EN 17816:2024 is part of a broader system of European standards for fertilizers and liming materials. Key related documents include:
