Overview

SIST-TS CEN/TS 15504:2009 defines requirements for visible variable passenger information devices inside public transport road vehicles, such as buses, tramways, and trolleybuses. These devices, often known as Interior Variable Message Signs (IVMS), present dynamic information to passengers, including next stops, route details, and real-time data. The standard guides the installation location, physical characteristics, information content, font, dimensions, and cabling for these electronic sign systems.

With the growing emphasis on accessible, user-friendly public transport, the standardized implementation of IVMS enhances passenger information and improves the overall transit experience. SIST-TS CEN/TS 15504:2009 is applicable across a variety of display technologies, including LCD, LED, and VFD.

Key Topics

  • System Scope
The specification addresses all IVMS systems mounted within the passenger compartment of road vehicles for public transport.

  • Device Types
The standard identifies three key types of passenger information devices:

    • Next stop IVMS: Indicates the upcoming stop and may include additional information such as line number and current time.
    • Route IVMS: Displays the vehicle's route, stops, and other route-specific details.
    • Precise time and tariff zone IVMS: Shows accurate time and applicable fare zones.
  • Installation Location
Guidelines specify optimal placements for visibility and passenger safety, such as:

    • High and central mounting for next stop and time/tariff displays.
    • Lateral mounting above windows or in boarding areas for route displays.
    • Placement in each section of articulated vehicles.
  • Physical and Display Characteristics

    • Minimum and maximum dimensions for each device type.
    • Font size, color, and clarity to ensure legibility.
    • Refresh rates and scrolling speeds for readable moving messages.
    • Robust design considerations, such as vandalism protection and anti-glare covers.
  • Cabling and Electrical Interfaces

    • Compatibility with on-board transmission buses (such as VBICS).
    • Easy maintenance and replacement through standardized mounting and cable penetrations.

Applications

The implementation of SIST-TS CEN/TS 15504:2009 benefits a wide range of stakeholders in the public transport sector:

  • Vehicle Manufacturers:
Ensure compliance with standardized IVMS requirements for visibility, safety, and integration, making vehicles adaptable for various European transit authorities.

  • Public Transport Operators:
Deploy consistent, high-quality, and accessible passenger information displays, improving real-time communication and enhancing the passenger journey.

  • System Integrators and Technology Providers:
Reference a clear set of installation and design criteria for interior message boards, supporting efficient integration of LCD, LED, or VFD technologies within vehicles.

  • Passengers:
Experience heightened clarity and reliability of key travel information, contributing to a more accessible and informed transit environment.

Related Standards

The following standards provide additional guidance on systems and cabling for public transport vehicles:

  • EN 13149 series:
    • EN 13149-1: Onboard data transmission (WORLDFIP application rules)
    • EN 13149-2: WORLDFIP cabling specifications
    • EN 13149-3: WORLDFIP message content
    • EN 13149-4: CANopen transmission buses
    • EN 13149-5: CANopen cabling specifications
    • CEN/TS 13149-6: CAN message content

Aligning SIST-TS CEN/TS 15504:2009 with these related standards ensures systematic interoperability, future-proofing, and maximum efficiency in public transport passenger information systems.

Adopting SIST-TS CEN/TS 15504:2009 enables a standardized, high-quality approach to passenger information in buses, trams, and trolleybuses across Europe, reliably enhancing the public transport user experience.
