General Information

Abstract

This European Standard specifies, dimensions, materials and performance requirements (including methods of test) for pressure safety valves, of nominal sizes from DN 15 to DN 40, having working pressures from 0,1 MPa (1 bar) to 1,0 MPa (10 bar). Pressure safety valves are intended for fitting to the cold water supply of storage water heaters, having a maximum distribution temperature of 95°C, for all energy sources. Pressure safety valves do not control the temperature and alone do not constitute the protection required for storage waters heaters.

Overview

SIST EN 1489:2000, titled Building valves - Pressure safety valves - Tests and requirements, is a European standard developed for pressure safety valves used in building water supply systems. This standard establishes specific requirements for the dimensions, materials, and performance, including detailed test methods, for pressure safety valves with nominal sizes from DN 15 to DN 40 and working pressures from 0.1 MPa to 1.0 MPa (1 to 10 bar). These valves are primarily intended for installation on the cold water supply of storage water heaters operating up to a maximum distribution temperature of 95°C, regardless of energy source.

Adhering to SIST EN 1489:2000 ensures reliable operation, safety, and compatibility of pressure safety valves within water supply installations. This standard is harmonized with EN 1489:2000 and is critical for manufacturers, designers, and building system operators.

Key Topics

  • Specifications for Dimensions and Materials
Sets clear requirements for nominal sizes (DN 15-DN 40) and materials suitable for pressure safety valve construction.

  • Performance Requirements
Details the acceptable operational thresholds, including working pressures and safety performance to ensure reliable overpressure protection.

  • Testing Methods
Outlines standardized procedures for assessing valve effectiveness, durability, and compliance with safety standards.

  • Intended Use
Designed specifically for pressure relief in the cold water supply lines of storage water heaters, preventing unsafe pressure buildup.

  • Scope Limitations
Clarifies that pressure safety valves, while essential for overpressure protection, do not regulate temperature and are not a substitute for complete water heater protection systems.

Applications

Pressure safety valves complying with SIST EN 1489:2000 are widely used in the following areas:

  • Residential and Commercial Buildings
Ensures safe water heater operation in apartments, office buildings, hotels, and other facilities relying on storage water heaters.

  • Water Supply Systems
Provides essential overpressure protection within public and private water distribution networks.

  • Storage Water Heaters
Safeguards the integrity of water heaters from overpressure incidents across all energy sources, enhancing lifecycle and safety.

  • International Trade and Compliance
Facilitates market access and regulatory approval for manufacturers seeking conformity with European safety standards for building valves.

Related Standards

Organizations and professionals engaged with SIST EN 1489:2000 may also find the following standards relevant:

  • EN 1489:2000 - The harmonized European base standard for pressure safety valves in building applications.
  • SIST EN 1490 - Focuses on backflow preventer valves for water supply systems.
  • EN ISO 228-1 - Covers pipe threads specifications for connections, which may be relevant in valve installation.
  • EN 806 series - Outlines general requirements for drinking water installations within buildings.

Conclusion

Compliance with SIST EN 1489:2000 is essential for ensuring the safety, reliability, and quality of pressure safety valves within building water supply and water heating systems. This standard supports manufacturers, engineers, and facilities managers in implementing robust overpressure protection measures, aligning with up-to-date European norms and enhancing overall water system safety.
