Overview

SIST EN ISO 14529-3:2000 is an international standard developed by CEN that specifies the requirements for selected melamine/phenolic powder moulding compounds (MP-PMCs) used in the plastics industry. This standard focuses on the physical and chemical properties of phenolic powder moulding compounds and the test specimens made by compression or injection moulding.

The standard is essential for ensuring consistency and quality in the production of MP-PMCs whose compositions and properties vary significantly but hold general technical and economic importance. It complements Parts 1 and 2 of ISO 14529 by defining property requirements for select compounds, using testing methods and designations established in the other parts.

Key Topics

  • Scope and Applicability
EN ISO 14529-3 covers MP-PMCs with different compositions, particularly those with distinct technical and economic relevance. It limits its requirements to compounds characterized by specific physical and chemical attributes essential for industrial applications.

  • Property Requirements
The standard sets precise values for mechanical properties such as:

    • Stress at break
    • Flexural strength
    • Charpy impact strength (both notched and unnotched)

It also defines thermal properties, including:

    • Temperature of deflection under load
    • Flammability classification

    Electrical properties like:

    • Dissipation factor
    • Volume and surface resistivity
    • Proof tracking index (PTI)

Are included to ensure suitability for electrical and structural applications.

  • Designation and Classification
MP-PMCs are classified by their filler and reinforcement types, which influence their behavior and compliance. The designation system is aligned with ISO 14529-1 to maintain consistency across international manufacturing and testing.

  • Test Methods and Conditions
Testing protocols are derived from ISO 14529-2, which details preparation of specimens and testing methods. These ensure that the results are reliable and comparable across different labs and manufacturers.

Applications

SIST EN ISO 14529-3:2000 is crucial for industries relying on phenolic powder moulding compounds for manufacturing electrical components, automotive parts, and household appliances. Key application areas include:

  • Electrical Insulation Components
Due to their excellent electrical resistivity and thermal stability, MP-PMCs are ideal for switches, circuit breakers, and other insulating parts.

  • Mechanical and Structural Parts
The compounds' strength and impact resistance make them suitable for producing durable moulded parts in automotive and appliance industries.

  • Thermally Resistant Components
High heat deflection temperatures ensure performance under elevated operating temperatures, useful in engineering and industrial applications.

Manufacturers and quality teams utilize this standard to verify batches of MP-PMCs meet stringent requirements, enhancing product reliability, safety, and compliance with regulatory demands.

Related Standards

To fully implement and reap the benefits of SIST EN ISO 14529-3:2000, these complementary standards should also be considered:

  • ISO 14529-1:1999 - Designation system and basis for specifications of MP-PMCs
  • ISO 14529-2:1999 - Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties
  • ISO 472:1999 - Vocabulary for plastics terms to ensure uniform terminology
  • ISO 4896:1990 - Previous specifications for melamine/phenolic moulding materials, now largely superseded by ISO 14529 series

Adhering to these standards collectively supports harmonized testing, designation, and quality control of melamine/phenolic powder moulding compounds worldwide.

ISO 14529-3:1999(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies (ISO
member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO technical
committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been established has
the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and non-governmental, in
liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the International Electrotechnical
Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 3.
Draft International Standards adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting.
Publication as an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this part of ISO 14529 may be the subject of
patent rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
International Standard ISO 14529-3 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 61, Plastics, Subcommittee
SC 12, Thermosetting materials.
After a transition period of, at the most, four years, the three parts of ISO 14529 (see below) will replace
ISO 4896:1990, of which they constitute a technical revision.
ISO 14529 consists of the following parts, under the general title Plastics — Melamine/phenolic powder moulding
compounds (MP-PMCs):
Part 1: Designation system and basis for specifications
Part 2: Preparation of test specimens and determination of properties
Part 3: Requirements for selected moulding compounds
Annex A of this part of ISO 14529 is for information only.
