Overview
oSIST prEN IEC 60674-3-1:2025 is a draft European Standard developed by the CLC and IEC technical committee for solid electrical insulating materials. This part of the IEC 60674 series focuses on specifications for biaxially oriented polypropylene (PP) films designed for use in capacitors. The standard establishes required properties, test methods, and designation for polypropylene films, ensuring reliable performance and quality in electrical and electronic applications. These specifications help manufacturers, suppliers, and end-users select suitable polypropylene films for use as dielectrics in capacitors, with clear criteria for quality, measurement, and conformity.
Key Topics
- Material types and classification: The standard details types of biaxially oriented polypropylene films, distinguishing by surface characteristics (smooth, rough, electric strength) and pre-treatment (corona treated or not).
- Film dimensions: Requirements and measurement methods for thickness, width, and roll characteristics are specified, supporting consistency across global supply chains.
- Electrical and physical properties: The document establishes key benchmarks for density, melting point, tensile strength, elongation, electrical strength, surface and volume resistivity, dissipation factor, and relative permittivity.
- Quality and production requirements: Criteria for joins (splices), roll width, labeling, and handling variations are included to maintain high standards in film processing and use.
- Testing methods: All property measurement requirements reference established IEC and ISO methods to support reproducibility and comparability.
Applications
The primary application of films covered by oSIST prEN IEC 60674-3-1:2025 is as a dielectric material for capacitors. Key uses and stakeholders include:
- Electrical capacitor manufacturers: These films serve as insulating layers, impacting capacitor efficiency, energy storage capacity, and safety.
- Electronics producers: High-quality PP films help ensure reliability in sensitive or high-voltage components.
- Material suppliers: Standards compliance guarantees that products meet global requirements, supporting trade and quality assurance.
- Testing laboratories: The referenced test methods provide consistency in quality checks and certification processes.
- OEMs in power transmission and industrial sectors: Reliable dielectric films are critical for consistent performance and safety in diverse environments.
The standard covers films with varying thicknesses and surface treatments, enabling their use in a broad range of capacitor types, from small electronic devices to large energy storage systems.
Related Standards
Those using oSIST prEN IEC 60674-3-1:2025 should also be aware of these directly related standards:
