Overview

EN 3745-505:2018 - Aerospace series: Fibres and cables, optical, aircraft use - Test methods - Part 505: Cable tensile strength is a CEN European Standard that specifies a reproducible method for measuring the tensile properties of fibre optic cables intended for aircraft use. It is intended to be used together with EN 3745-100 (General) and references EN 60794 and other EN 3745 parts for complementary tests (visual, attenuation).

Key topics and requirements

  • Scope: Defines procedures to determine cable tensile strength and related optical/mechanical effects under tensile load.
  • Specimen preparation:
    • Prepare samples per EN 60794, Method E1.
    • Stabilize specimens for 24 hours at standard test conditions defined in EN 3745-100 when not already at those conditions.
    • Measure attenuation before tensile testing (EN 3745-301 method C).
    • Cleaning: UV-curable acrylic-coated fibres may be cleaned with manufacturer-recommended agents; avoid chlorine-based cleaners.
  • Apparatus:
    • Attenuation test setup (EN 3745-301).
    • Tensile test apparatus per EN 60794 Method E1 for Method A.
    • Tensile tester with elongation accuracy 1% for Method B.
  • Test methods:
    • Method A: Uses a transfer device and chuck drum; performed in accordance with EN 60794 Method E1. Suitable for long sample lengths (sample length can be >100 m).
    • Method B: Uses a clamping device; cable pulled between two mandrels (mandrel diameter ≥ 50 mm). Initial length between mandrels (250 ± 1) mm, pulling speed (50 ± 10) mm/min, at least three turns on each mandrel. Sample length can be ≈5 m.
  • Final measurements and outputs (referenced to product standard):
    • Visual examination (EN 3745-201)
    • Attenuation changes (before/after, at maximum tensile rating)
    • Maximum recorded fibre strain at maximum tensile rating (Method A)
    • Mechanical characteristics: maximum load to optical discontinuity; breaking load for the complete cable

Applications

  • Qualification and type approval of aircraft fibre optic cables.
  • Incoming inspection and production quality control for aerospace cable manufacturers.
  • Test procedures for design validation, maintenance planning, and certification evidence where tensile performance affects optical continuity.
  • Used by aerospace test laboratories, OEMs, suppliers, and certification authorities.

Who should use this standard

  • Aerospace fibre optic cable manufacturers and designers
  • Test and calibration laboratories
  • Aircraft systems engineers and QA/acceptance teams
  • Regulatory and certification bodies evaluating cable mechanical/optical integrity

Related standards

  • EN 3745-100 (General)
  • EN 3745-201 (Visual examination)
  • EN 3745-301 (Attenuation)
  • EN 60794 (Optical fibre cables - Method E1 referenced)
