Overview

ISO/IEC 15444-11:2007/Amd 1:2013 is an amendment to the ISO/IEC 15444-11 standard, part of the JPEG 2000 family of standards. Titled “Information technology - JPEG 2000 image coding system: Wireless - Amendment 1: IP based wireless networks,” it introduces enhanced support for transmitting JPEG 2000 images over IP-based wireless networks. This amendment focuses on advanced error protection and interleaving techniques for robust image communications in environments prone to data loss, such as wireless and mobile networks.

JPEG 2000 (JP2) is a widely used image compression standard valued for its high compression efficiency and flexibility. Part 11 (JPWL) addresses wireless transmission challenges, ensuring that images remain resilient to errors typical in wireless or unreliable networks.

Key Topics

1. Virtual Data Interleaving for Error Protection

  • Introduces virtual interleaving techniques to enhance error resilience.
  • Explains how data and parity bytes are processed and mapped for transmission.
  • Focuses on maintaining image integrity over unreliable connections.

2. Interleaving Methods

  • Inter-frame only: Redundancy is grouped across consecutive codestreams for robust error correction.
  • Intra-frame Unequal Error Protection (UEP): Within a single codestream, interleaving with Reed-Solomon codes creates parity information tailored to different error protection rates and compression levels.
  • Combined methods: Allows the use of interleaving both within and across frames for optimal error mitigation.

3. Block-Based Interleaving Algorithms

  • Details the use of block interleaving to scatter data bytes, minimizing the effect of packet losses.
  • Supports adaptive matrix sizing to maximize data dispersion across wireless packets.

4. Error Protection Configuration

  • Defines how error protection settings and interleaving methods are signaled within the JPEG 2000 codestream using EPC (Error Protection Capability) marker segments.
  • Specifies standardized fields (IDs, lengths, offsets) for interoperability.

5. Registration Authority Updates

  • Updates references regarding the management and future registration of error protection tools by the JPWL Registration Authority.

Applications

The amendment is particularly relevant to:

  • Wireless Image Transmission: Ensures high quality and reliability for image data sent over Wi-Fi, 4G/5G, and other IP-based wireless networks.
  • Mobile Multimedia Services: Robustly delivers compressed imagery to mobile devices where packet loss and network variability are common.
  • Remote Sensing & Surveillance: Protects image integrity in critical applications like live drone video feeds or emergency services using wireless links.
  • Broadcast & Streaming: Facilitates error-resilient image distribution for television and live events over wireless infrastructures.
  • Any IP-based Networked Imaging Solutions: Extends the benefits of JPWL to new wireless environments using the Internet Protocol.

ISO/IEC 15444-11:2007/Amd.1:2013(E)
Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) and IEC (the International Electrotechnical
Commission) form the specialized system for worldwide standardization. National bodies that are members of
ISO or IEC participate in the development of International Standards through technical committees
established by the respective organization to deal with particular fields of technical activity. ISO and IEC
technical committees collaborate in fields of mutual interest. Other international organizations, governmental
and non-governmental, in liaison with ISO and IEC, also take part in the work. In the field of information
technology, ISO and IEC have established a joint technical committee, ISO/IEC JTC 1.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of the joint technical committee is to prepare International Standards. Draft International
Standards adopted by the joint technical committee are circulated to national bodies for voting. Publication as
an International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the national bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO and IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
Amendment 1 to ISO/IEC 15444-11:2007 was prepared by Joint Technical Committee ISO/IEC JTC 1,
Information technology, Subcommittee SC 29, Coding of audio, picture, multimedia and hypermedia
information, in collaboration with ITU-T. The identical text is published as ITU-T T.810 (2006)/Amd.1

1) Annex K
Add Annex K (the current Annexes K and L become Annex L and Annex M, respectively):
Annex K
Virtual data interleaving based error protection
(This annex forms an integral part of this Recommendation | International Standard.)
K.1 Introduction
The objective of this annex is to explain how it is possible, using the tools of JPWL, to apply a virtual interleaving for
enabling robustness to data packet losses and erasures. Error protection techniques described in this Recommendation |
International Standard, can be applied independently, such as Unequal Error Protection or any method described in the
EPC marker segment.
K.2 Interleaving-based error protection methods description
Figure K.1 shows a detailed data flow of the processing steps required for the correction technique. Images are encoded
into codestreams according to Rec. ITU-T T.800 | ISO/IEC 15444-1. After the initialization of the encoding parameters
and structures, EPC and EPB markers are created. The parity bytes of the data are then computed using the virtual
interleaving technique; an invertible address permutation function is used to map the original data stream (the JPEG
2000 bitstream codeblock bytes) into an interleaved one. It should be noted that this step does not change the position of
the compressed data. After the parity data has been calculated, a further interleaving step can be performed on them; in
this case, the interleaving depth can extend over several adjacent codestreams. Eventually, the parity data are dumped
into the codestreams, which are then sent through the transmission channel. At the receiver side, the data is first
interleaved according to the same permutation law adopted during the transmission; afterwards, JPWL error correction
is applied and, eventually, the data is de-interleaved to re-create the ordered codestream.
