Overview

ISO 6415:2005 is an international standard developed by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) that establishes the essential dimensions for spin-on filters used for lubricating oil in internal combustion engines. The standard applies to spin-on, full-flow filters and ensures the interchangeability of these components across various engine designs and manufacturers. In addition to dimensional requirements, ISO 6415:2005 outlines the designation and specific marking practices for spin-on oil filters, supporting consistency and compatibility in both production and aftermarket environments.

Key Topics

  • Interchangeability: ISO 6415:2005 specifies the essential dimensional requirements for the connection thread, sealing surface, filter diameter, and length. These specifications allow for the seamless replacement and compatibility of spin-on lubricating oil filters.
  • Thread and Sealing Requirements: The standard references ISO 68, ISO 261, ISO 965-1, and ISO 965-3 for connection threads, ensuring standardization and a secure fit.
  • By-pass Valve: It defines the requirement for a by-pass valve or equivalent device within the filter, to protect equipment in cases of blockage or high pressure, unless a by-pass valve is already incorporated into the engine.
  • Base Design: The canister base of the filter must facilitate easy installation and removal and can be designed with a curved surface, grooves, or flats.
  • Designation and Marking: Filters must be marked with details such as the manufacturer, type designation, manufacture date/code, installation instructions, and the ISO designation, promoting traceability and correct use.
  • Avoiding Mismatching: The standard warns against using unified (inch-based) threads to prevent accidental mismatching, as ISO 6415:2005 standardizes on metric threads for oil filters.

Applications

ISO 6415:2005 is widely applied in sectors involving internal combustion engines, including:

  • Automotive Industry: Ensures compatibility and standardization for passenger vehicles, trucks, and commercial vehicles requiring spin-on lubricating oil filters.
  • OEM Manufacturing: Assists original equipment manufacturers in designing and sourcing oil filters that meet international dimensional standards, reducing the risk of compatibility issues.
  • Aftermarket Services: Supports aftermarket suppliers, workshops, and mechanics in providing reliable replacement spin-on oil filters.
  • Engine Maintenance: Enables routine servicing and maintenance of engines by specifying standardized oil filter sizes and installation criteria.
  • Quality and Safety Compliance: Underpins efforts to maintain oil filtration performance, engine reliability, and safety by promoting the correct specification and installation of oil filters.

Related Standards

For comprehensive implementation and compatibility, ISO 6415:2005 should be considered alongside these related standards:

  • ISO 68 (all parts): General purpose screw threads - Basic profile
  • ISO 261: General purpose metric screw threads - General plan
  • ISO 965-1: General-purpose metric screw threads - Tolerances - Part 1: Principles and basic data
  • ISO 965-3: General purpose metric screw threads - Tolerances - Part 3: Deviations for constructional screw threads

These referenced ISO standards ensure precise thread dimensions and fitment, as required by ISO 6415:2005 for spin-on oil filters.

By adhering to ISO 6415:2005, manufacturers and service providers in the engine and automotive industries can benefit from enhanced product compatibility, safer operation, and smoother maintenance processes. Compliance ensures that lubricating oil spin-on filters can be interchanged with confidence, supporting operational reliability and international trade.

Foreword
ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards bodies
(ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out through ISO
technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical committee has been
established has the right to be represented on that committee. International organizations, governmental and
non-governmental, in liaison with ISO, also take part in the work. ISO collaborates closely with the
International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) on all matters of electrotechnical standardization.
International Standards are drafted in accordance with the rules given in the ISO/IEC Directives, Part 2.
The main task of technical committees is to prepare International Standards. Draft International Standards
adopted by the technical committees are circulated to the member bodies for voting. Publication as an
International Standard requires approval by at least 75 % of the member bodies casting a vote.
Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this document may be the subject of patent
rights. ISO shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
ISO 6415 was prepared by Technical Committee ISO/TC 22, Road vehicles, Subcommittee SC 7, Injection
equipment and filters for use on road vehicles.
This third edition cancels and replaces the second edition (ISO 6415:1990), which has been technically
revised.
