Overview
ISO 4548-13:2023 sets out the standardized test method for evaluating the static burst pressure resistance of composite filter housings for full-flow lubricating oil filters used in internal combustion engines. Designed by ISO’s Technical Committee on Internal Combustion Engines, this document ensures filter housings can reliably withstand high and low static pressures, simulate a range of operational temperatures, and helps determine burst pressure as well as failure modes. This standard is applicable to all types of oil filters, including spin-on designs and filters with temperature-sensitive composite materials, covering both new filters and those returned after endurance testing.
Key Topics
Purpose of Static Burst Pressure Testing
This method assesses the ability of oil filter housings to endure sudden static pressures, particularly critical for filters constructed from composite materials often subjected to wide temperature variations during engine operation.Temperature and Pressure Requirements
The test is conducted across a temperature range from -20 °C to +130 °C. Pressures are gradually increased until leakage, distortion, or filter burst is observed, simulating extreme engine conditions.Test Equipment
The standard specifies use of a controlled hydraulic system incorporating pumps, valves, and precision pressure/temperature monitoring devices. An environmental chamber is recommended for accurate temperature control.Test Procedure
Key steps include:- Mounting the filter under conditions replicating real engine installation.
- Filling the system with appropriate oil, removing air, and controlling temperature.
- Incrementally increasing internal pressure to detect leaks or failure.
- Recording burst pressure and observing the physical mode of failure.
Reporting Requirements
A detailed test report must document filter details, test conditions, applied torque, oil type, target and achieved pressures, burst pressure, failure observations, and any deviations from procedure.
Applications
ISO 4548-13:2023 provides valuable quality assurance and product validation processes for:
- Filter Manufacturers:
Enables robust design verification for composite oil filter housings, ensuring products meet strict safety and reliability thresholds before reaching the market. - Automotive and Engine OEMs:
Facilitates supplier quality control by providing a benchmark for pressure resistance under varied operational temperatures, vital for both light-duty and heavy-duty powertrains. - Testing Laboratories:
Serves as an essential methodology for independent filter analysis, failure investigation, and certification of new and returned filters following durability tests. - Safety and Compliance Engineers:
Assures that oil filters used in internal combustion engines comply with global performance standards, lowering the risk of catastrophic engine failures due to housing rupture.
Related Standards
Implementing ISO 4548-13:2023 can be complemented by referencing these related international standards:
- ISO 4548-1: Differential pressure/flow characteristics measurement for oil filters.
- ISO 4548-6: Static burst pressure tests for other housing types.
- ISO 12829: Guidelines for hydraulic spin-on filter reliability and burst pressure testing.
- ISO 19973-1: Reliability assessment methodologies by testing.
- SAE J300c: Classification for engine oil viscosity, relevant for selecting correct test liquids.
Apply ISO 4548-13:2023 to ensure consistent, internationally accepted testing, helping manufacturers, quality assurance teams, and engine developers guarantee the integrity and safety of lubricating oil filters in internal combustion applications.

ISO (the International Organization for Standardization) is a worldwide federation of national standards
bodies (ISO member bodies). The work of preparing International Standards is normally carried out
through ISO technical committees. Each member body interested in a subject for which a technical
committee has been established has the right to be represented on that committee. International

Introduction
The ISO 4548 series establishes standard test procedures for measuring the performance of full-flow
lubricating oil filters for internal combustion engines. Each part in the series relates to a particular
performance characteristic.
Together the tests provide the information necessary to assess the characteristics of a filter, but if
agreed between the purchaser and the manufacturer, the tests may be conducted separately.
This document deals with filter modules made of composite materials for internal combustion engines
