Overview
EN 62056-46:2002 is a European standard developed by CENELEC (CLC) that defines the data link layer for data exchange in electricity metering systems. This standard is a crucial part of the EN 62056 series, focusing on the communication protocols used for meter reading, tariff calculation, and load control. Specifically, EN 62056-46:2002 specifies the use of an HDLC-based protocol (High-level Data Link Control) for the asynchronous, connection-oriented communication profile between electricity meters and data collection systems.
Adopting EN 62056-46:2002 ensures interoperability across smart metering infrastructure, enabling energy providers and utility companies to implement robust and secure data exchange methods for accurate billing, remote meter reading, and effective demand-response strategies.
Key Topics
- HDLC Protocol in Metering: Outlines how the HDLC protocol is adapted for the data link layer, facilitating reliable and secure communication between meters and central systems.
- Connection-Oriented Communication: Details procedures for establishing, maintaining, and terminating connections, ensuring data integrity in electricity metering applications.
- Asynchronous Communication Profile: Supports asynchronous data exchange, making it suitable for varied metering environments and communication media.
- Interoperability Requirements: Ensures devices from different manufacturers can communicate seamlessly using the specified HDLC-based protocol.
- Standard References and Normative Documents: Incorporates references to other key standards, such as EN 62056-42 (Physical Layer), EN 62056-53 (Application Layer), and international HDLC specifications.
Applications
EN 62056-46:2002 plays a pivotal role in modern smart metering systems, supporting the following applications:
- Automated Meter Reading (AMR): Enables utilities to remotely access real-time electricity consumption data, reducing operational costs and improving billing accuracy.
- Tariff and Load Control: Facilitates dynamic pricing and load management by supporting reliable, real-time communication for tariff updates and demand-side management.
- Integration with Meter Data Management Systems (MDMS): Ensures smooth data integration between field devices and backend systems, contributing to effective grid management.
- Utility Network Interoperability: Assists in deploying multi-vendor metering systems while maintaining data consistency and security, a key requirement for large-scale smart grid projects.
- Regulatory Compliance: Helps utilities comply with European regulations for electricity metering and data exchange protocols.
Related Standards
EN 62056-46:2002 is part of a comprehensive suite of standards addressing various layers and aspects of electricity metering data exchange:
- EN 62056-42: Physical layer services and procedures for connection-oriented asynchronous data exchange.
- EN 62056-53: COSEM application layer, describing data structures and services over the metering interface.
- EN 62056-61: Object Identification System (OBIS), for data identification in metering systems.
- EN 62056-62: Interface classes for metering device functionality.
- ISO/IEC 13239: General HDLC procedures, providing foundational requirements for HDLC-based communications.
- IEC 61334 Series: Addresses broader issues of telecontrol in electrical distribution systems.
By following EN 62056-46:2002 and its related standards, utilities and technology providers ensure the secure, reliable, and interoperable exchange of metering data, which is essential for the future of smart grids and advanced electricity supply systems.
