Overview

EN IEC 61753-022-02:2026 is a key international performance standard for multimode fibre optic connectors terminated as pigtails and patchcords, intended for use in controlled environment (category C) settings. Published by CLC and under IEC maintenance, this standard specifies the minimum initial test and measurement requirements, as well as test severities, that these connectors must meet to comply with category C as defined in IEC 61753-1.

This edition revises and replaces the previous standard (IEC 61753-022-2:2012), introducing updated test criteria, extending provisions for new connector types, and refining performance evaluation procedures. It supports manufacturers, quality inspectors, and network operators by ensuring interoperability, reliability, and quality assurance for multimode fibre optic components in environments with controlled conditions such as data centers and equipment rooms.

Key Topics

  • Performance Criteria: Defines pass/fail limits for key optical characteristics including attenuation and return loss, ensuring consistent high performance across all tested connectors.
  • Test Requirements: Establishes an updated set of mechanical and climatic tests (e.g., vibration, torsion, mating durability, tensile strength, impact, temperature cycling), referencing IEC 61300 series methods.
  • Connector Types: Includes both cylindrical and rectangular ferrule connectors, with tailored provisions for each (e.g., different mating durability cycles).
  • Cable Assemblies: Applies to connector terminations on various cable constructions, including buffered and reinforced cables, aligned with IEC 60794 series.
  • Endface Geometry and Visual Inspection: Sets requirements for endface geometry, visual inspection for defects or scratches, and marking/monitoring of cable sheath movement in reinforced cable assemblies.
  • Documentation and Traceability: Stresses the provision of comprehensive test reports and supporting evidence for compliance verification.

Applications

EN IEC 61753-022-02:2026 is essential for:

  • Fibre Optic Manufacturing: Guiding the design and production of reliable multimode patchcords and pigtails for controlled environments.
  • Data Centers and Telecom Facilities: Ensuring interconnecting devices deliver high optical performance and durability in areas with stable, regulated environmental conditions.
  • Quality Control and Compliance Testing: Providing standardized test methods and criteria for third-party laboratories and in-house quality assurance teams.
  • Product Qualification: Supporting procurement and specification processes by defining minimum product requirements for use in infrastructure projects.
  • Upgrading and Certifying Legacy Installations: Enabling assessment and recertification of existing multimode fibre optic links in line with the latest international best practices.

Related Standards

For comprehensive application and compliance, EN IEC 61753-022-02:2026 should be used in conjunction with the following standards:

  • IEC 61753-1: General requirements and guidance for fibre optic interconnecting devices and passive components.
  • IEC 61300 Series: Test and measurement procedures for fibre optic components, including methods for attenuation, return loss, mechanical, and climatic testing.
  • IEC 60793-2-10: Product specification for category A1 multimode optical fibres, referenced for fibre type alignment.
  • IEC 60794 Series: Requirements for fibre optic cable constructions (indoor cables, simplex, duplex, and multi-fibre cables).
  • IEC 61754 Series: Definitions of fibre optic connector interfaces.
  • IEC 63267 Series: Optical interface parameters for multimode connectors and enhanced macro bend loss multimode fibres.
  • EN ISO/IEC Directives: For drafting, terminology, and the structure of international standards documentation.

Conclusion

EN IEC 61753-022-02:2026 provides robust, harmonized criteria for the evaluation and qualification of multimode fibre optic connectors in controlled environments. Adherence ensures high performance, reliability, and quality compliance in critical optical networks, streamlining procurement, manufacturing, and infrastructure deployment processes.

42 FOREWORD
43 1) The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
44 all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
45 co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
46 in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
47 Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as “IEC Publication(s)”). Their
48 preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
49 may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
50 with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
51 Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
52 2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
53 consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
54 interested IEC National Committees.
55 3) IEC Publications have the form of recommendations for international use and are accepted by IEC National
56 Committees in that sense. While all reasonable efforts are made to ensure that the technical content of IEC
57 Publications is accurate, IEC cannot be held responsible for the way in which they are used or for any
58 misinterpretation by any end user.
59 4) In order to promote international uniformity, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC Publications
60 transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional publications. Any divergence between
61 any IEC Publication and the corresponding national or regional publication shall be clearly indicated in the latter.
62 5) IEC itself does not provide any attestation of conformity. Independent certification bodies provide conformity
63 assessment services and, in some areas, access to IEC marks of conformity. IEC is not responsible for any
64 services carried out by independent certification bodies.
65 6) All users should ensure that they have the latest edition of this publication.
66 7) No liability shall attach to IEC or its directors, employees, servants or agents including individual experts and
67 members of its technical committees and IEC National Committees for any personal injury, property damage or
68 other damage of any nature whatsoever, whether direct or indirect, or for costs (including legal fees) and
69 expenses arising out of the publication, use of, or reliance upon, this IEC Publication or any other IEC
70 Publications.
71 8) Attention is drawn to the Normative references cited in this publication. Use of the referenced publications is
72 indispensable for the correct application of this publication.
73 9) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this IEC Publication may be the subject of patent
74 rights. IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.

215 4 Tests
216 All test and measurement methods were selected from the IEC 61300 series and the test
217 parameters and requirements from IEC 61753-1 as defined in 7.6 and 7.7. Additional
218 requirements to certain tests are given in Annex B.
219 The connector plugs under test shall be terminated onto multimode fibre as per type A1 of
220 IEC 60793-2-10 fibre type A1-OM2, A1-OM3, A1-OM4 or A1-OM5 in either primary coated,
221 buffered or reinforced cable format. The full set of tests shall be carried out for at least one fibre
222 type. Other fibre types are qualified by similarity. The reinforced cable used for the pigtails or
223 patchcords shall conform to the requirements of IEC 60794-2-23 or IEC 60794-2-50. Care shall
224 be taken to respect the minimum bend radius of the cable. The connector interface standard
225 shall meet the dimensions of the relevant part of
