Fibre optic connector interfaces - Part 12: Type FS connector family

Defines the standard interface dimensions for the type FS connector family which is a duplex connector set of plug and adaptor configuration. The plug has a pair of cylindrical spring loaded abutting ferrules of 2,5 mm nominal ferrule diameter. The optical alignment mechanism is a rigid bore or resilient sleeve contained within the adaptor. It includes a hand-released latch coupling. The plug has multiple keyway arrangements and the adaptor has multiple key configurations. The keying scheme is exclusionary and is used to limit mating between plug and adaptor to specific key combinations.

Overview

EN 61754-12:1999 (IEC 61754-12:1999) specifies the interface dimensions and keying arrangements for the Type FS connector family, a duplex fibre optic connector set comprising plug and adaptor. The standard defines form, fit and keying so that plugs and adaptors manufactured to these dimensions are interoperable. Key physical features include a pair of 2.5 mm nominal spring‑loaded abutting ferrules, an optical alignment mechanism (rigid bore or resilient sleeve in the adaptor), and a hand‑released latch coupling. The document covers multiple plug keyway variants and corresponding adaptor key configurations with an exclusionary keying scheme to restrict mating combinations.

Key Topics

  • Interface definitions: The standard contains 16 interface variants (Interfaces 12-1 through 12-16) covering plug and adaptor variants for multimode and single‑mode applications.
  • Mechanical dimensions & tolerances: Detailed dimensional tables for plug and adaptor geometries, including critical dimensions at the optical reference plane and tolerance grade tables for key features.
  • Ferrule & alignment requirements: Specification of duplex 2.5 mm ferrules, allowable ferrule travel, and static ferrule force range at the optical reference plane.
  • Alignment feature: Use of a rigid bore or resilient sleeve within the adaptor; the sleeve’s retention force for gauge pins is specified.
  • Keying scheme: Multiple keyway/key variants (A, B, M, S, SA, SB, SM, SS) and intermateability matrices that control which plug/adaptor combinations will mate.
  • Gauge pin and testing: Gauge pin dimensions and surface finish requirements used to verify alignment features and tolerances.
  • Coupling features: Requirements for hand‑released latches and allowable movement to ensure proper mating and retention.

Applications

EN 61754-12:1999 is relevant to:

  • Connector manufacturers designing Type FS plugs and adaptors to standard dimensions.
  • Telecommunications and datacom engineers specifying compatible duplex connectors for patch panels, equipment interfaces and cabling systems.
  • Test laboratories and quality assurance teams validating mechanical compliance, alignment sleeve retention, and intermateability.
  • Procurement and system integrators ensuring parts from different suppliers will intermate reliably in multimode and single‑mode installations.

Practical use cases include duplex fibre patching in networking gear, cross‑connect panels and systems requiring keyed connectors to prevent incorrect mating.

Related Standards

  • IEC/EN 61754 series - other parts define interface dimensions for different fibre connector families.
  • Product and performance standards (e.g., IEC fibre optic performance tests) are typically applied alongside EN 61754‑12 for complete qualification.

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising

organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of the IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an
international consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation
from all interested National Committees.
3) The documents produced have the form of recommendations for international use and are published in the form
of standards, technical reports or guides and they are accepted by the National Committees in that sense.
4) In order to promote international unification, IEC National Committees undertake to apply IEC International
Standards transparently to the maximum extent possible in their national and regional standards. Any
divergence between the IEC Standard and the corresponding national or regional standard shall be clearly
indicated in the latter.
5) The IEC provides no marking procedure to indicate its approval and cannot be rendered responsible for any
equipment declared to be in conformity with one of its standards.
6) Attention is drawn to the possibility that some of the elements of this International Standard may be the subject
of patent rights. The IEC shall not be held responsible for identifying any or all such patent rights.
