Overview
EN 61754-9:2001 (CLC adoption of IEC 61754-9) specifies the standard interface dimensions for the Type DS connector family - a single-position, spring-loaded ferrule fibre optic connector with a nominal 2.5 mm ferrule diameter. The standard defines plug (Interface 9-1) and jack (Interface 9-2) interfaces that are intermateable and intended primarily for plug-in backplane and printed‑circuit board (PCB) applications. It is based on IEC 61754-9:1996 with a CENELEC corrigendum (surface roughness R = 0.2 µm).
Key topics and technical requirements
- Connector configuration: Single-position plug and jack set; plug retained in backplane housing, jack retained in PCB housing; mating by inserting PCB into backplane.
- Ferrule: Cylindrical, spring-loaded ferrule with a spherically polished endface making physical contact. Dome eccentricity requirement < 50 µm.
- Nominal ferrule diameter: 2.5 mm with defined grade tolerances (example grades given for ferrule diameter).
- Mechanical dimensions: Detailed dimensional limits for plug and jack interfaces (A, B, C, D, etc.) to ensure intermateability; maximum allowable backplane thickness noted as 2.5 mm.
- Alignment mechanism: Optical alignment via a resilient alignment sleeve (rigid hole or resilient sleeve styles are permitted). The sleeve must accept a gauge pin to 7 mm depth with 2 N to 5.9 N insertion force under specified conditions.
- Ferrule compression force: Specified range 7.8 N to 11.8 N when the optical datum is moved within defined limits.
- Gauging and surface finish: Pin gauge dimensions (CK, CL, CN) and corrected surface roughness requirement R = 0.2 µm for the resilient alignment sleeve gauge.
Applications
- Backplane-to-PCB fibre optic interconnects in telecom, networking and high-density electronic systems
- PCB-mounted optical jacks and removable plug modules for boards that connect directly to a backplane
- Designs requiring standardized mechanical interchangeability and reliable physical-contact fibre mating
Who uses this standard
- Connector and module designers and manufacturers
- PCB and backplane system integrators and OEMs
- Test laboratories performing dimensional, mechanical and mating compliance checks
- Procurement and quality engineers specifying intermateable optical connector interfaces

FOREWORD
1) The IEC (International Electrotechnical Commission) is a worldwide organization for standardization comprising
all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of the IEC is to promote
international co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To
this end and in addition to other activities, the IEC publishes International Standards. Their preparation is
entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with may
participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. The IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization
for Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agr
