Overview

EN 62841-2-10:2017/prA1:2024 is a European standard developed by CLC, harmonizing safety requirements for electric motor-operated hand-held tools, transportable tools, and lawn and garden machinery. This amendment specifically addresses particular safety requirements for hand-held mixers. The standard is part of the EN 62841 series, which sets the foundation for safe design and operation of electric tools used across industrial, commercial, and domestic environments.

The amendment, issued in 2024, updates and refines safety protocols to safeguard users, clarify compliance procedures, and define robust test methods. Its goal is to ensure that manufacturers, product testers, and regulatory bodies adhere to the latest safety benchmarks for hand-held electric mixers.

Key Topics

  • Scope of Application: Focuses on electric motor-operated hand-held mixers, establishing requirements to prevent accidents, overheating, and misuse.
  • Abnormal Operation: Introduces provisions to ensure that devices do not exceed thermal limits during abnormal operation, preventing fire hazards and equipment failure.
  • Component Requirements: Updates rules regarding protection devices or circuits, including a preference for non-self-resetting protection unless a momentary power switch is used.
  • Ergonomics: Specifies key safety markings, such as the correct hand placement for safe operation, enhancing user awareness and minimizing risk.
  • Battery-Operated Tools: Details testing procedures for battery-powered mixers, ensuring safety even with the lightest acceptable battery that supports tool operation for a minimum duration.
  • Transitional Period: Recommends a 36-month transition timeframe for manufacturers and testing bodies to adapt to the new requirements.

Applications

Implementing EN 62841-2-10:2017/prA1:2024 ensures that hand-held electric mixers meet pan-European safety expectations. The standard is vital for:

  • Manufacturers: Designing and producing compliant hand-held mixers for professional and DIY markets. Adhering to this standard helps demonstrate legal and regulatory compliance, facilitating market access.
  • Certification Bodies: Testing and certifying tools according to unified safety protocols, supporting mutual recognition of test results across Europe.
  • Quality Assurance Professionals: Enhancing internal safety audits, product recalls, and continuous improvement of tool safety.
  • Regulatory Authorities: Assessing market surveillance and ensuring that only compliant equipment is distributed or sold.
  • End Users: Benefiting from higher safety levels when operating electric hand-held mixers in construction, home improvement, and gardening.

Compliance reduces liability risks, supports consumer trust, and promotes safe handling practices for all user groups.

Related Standards

The EN 62841-2-10:2017/prA1:2024 amendment closely interacts with other standards within the EN 62841 series, such as:

  • EN 62841-1: General requirements for safety of electric motor-operated tools.
  • Other EN 62841 Parts: Covering specific types of hand-held, transportable, and garden tools (e.g., drills, saws, blowers).
  • IEC 62841 Series: The international parent standard, providing harmonized safety rules globally.
  • ISO/IEC Directives: Guiding the drafting and continual revision of safety standards for electrical equipment.

By referencing and complying with related standards, organizations can establish a comprehensive safety system for a wide variety of electric tools and equipment.

Key terms: EN 62841-2-10, hand-held mixers, electric tools, safety standard, CLC, battery tools, regulatory compliance, product certification

all national electrotechnical committees (IEC National Committees). The object of IEC is to promote international
co-operation on all questions concerning standardization in the electrical and electronic fields. To this end and
in addition to other activities, IEC publishes International Standards, Technical Specifications, Technical Reports,
Publicly Available Specifications (PAS) and Guides (hereafter referred to as "IEC Publication(s)"). Their
preparation is entrusted to technical committees; any IEC National Committee interested in the subject dealt with
may participate in this preparatory work. International, governmental and non-governmental organizations liaising
with the IEC also participate in this preparation. IEC collaborates closely with the International Organization for
Standardization (ISO) in accordance with conditions determined by agreement between the two organizations.
2) The formal decisions or agreements of IEC on technical matters express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the relevant subjects since each technical committee has representation from all
interested IEC National Committees.
