Low-voltage electrical installations - Part 4-43: Protection for safety - Protection against overcurrent
IEC 60364-4-43:2023 provides requirements for: - protection of live conductors, PEN conductors, PEM conductors, and PEL conductors against the harmful effects caused by overcurrent; - coordination of measures for protection against overcurrent. This fourth edition cancels and replaces the third edition published in 2008. This edition constitutes a technical revision. This edition includes the following significant technical changes with respect to the previous edition: a) the standard has been restructured, see Table 1 (Correspondence between IEC 60364‑4‑43:2008 and this document) below; b) the measure "automatic disconnection of supply" has been designated as the preferred measure for protection against overcurrent; c) all measures except the measure "automatic disconnection of supply" have been transferred into new normative annexes to indicate that these measures are usable in certain applications and under certain restricted conditions only (see Annex A, Annex B and Annex E); d) a new clause "Terms and definitions" has been added; e) new requirements have been added for the protection of the neutral or mid-point conductor (with and without triplen harmonics).

Overview
HD 60364-4-43:2023/prAA:2025 is a draft amendment under the European Committee for Electrotechnical Standardization (CLC) addressing the safety and reliability of low-voltage electrical installations. Specifically, this standard focuses on protection against overcurrent by providing updated requirements for the placement and coordination of overcurrent protection devices within installations. This amendment aligns closely with IEC 60364-4-43:2023, introducing technical revisions and clarifications, while also defining the scope of national conditions and deviations to support harmonized practices across member states.
By adopting this standard, electrical engineers, designers, and regulatory bodies can ensure enhanced safety for persons and properties, prevent electrical fires, and maintain effective operation of household, commercial, and industrial power systems.
Key Topics
- Protection of Conductors: Outlines how live, PEN, PEM, and PEL conductors must be shielded from harmful overcurrent effects to minimize safety hazards.
- Device Positioning: Annex G provides detailed requirements for placing protective devices. Devices must typically be installed at the origin of each circuit unless exceptions apply.
- Overload and Short-Circuit Protection: Updated criteria for positioning devices to guard against overloads and short-circuits, considering different installation scenarios and the reduction of conductors' capacity.
- Special National Conditions and Deviations: Annex ZB and ZC note specific national requirements and regulatory deviations, ensuring national legislation is respected while supporting harmonization.
- Technical Updates and Restructuring:
- Preferred use of “automatic disconnection of supply” for overcurrent protection.
- Other methods confined to specific annexes for restricted use.
- Addition of new terms and definitions.
- Enhanced focus on the neutral or mid-point conductor, especially for installations with or without triplen harmonics.
Applications
The standard is critical for professionals involved in the design, installation, inspection, and maintenance of low-voltage electrical systems. Common areas of application include:
- Residential Buildings: Ensuring household wiring is safeguarded against potential overload or short-circuit incidents.
- Commercial and Industrial Facilities: Providing requirements for complex installations with multiple circuits and varied conductor types.
- Electricity Supply Systems: Guidance for network operators on the correct installation and coordination of overcurrent protection devices at various distribution points.
- Product Compliance: Manufacturers of fuses, circuit breakers, and overcurrent protection devices can align product design with regional expectations and technical requirements.
The practical guidelines and technical clarifications in this standard help reduce risks such as electrical fires, equipment damage, and minimize service interruptions, supporting both safety and continuity.
Related Standards
Professionals referencing HD 60364-4-43:2023/prAA:2025 should also consider related standards for comprehensive compliance:
- IEC 60364-4-43:2023: The international base document for overcurrent protection in low-voltage systems.
