Overview
EN 13286-50:2004 is a European standard developed by CEN that specifies the method for manufacturing cylindrical test specimens of hydraulically bound mixtures, using either Proctor equipment or vibrating table compaction. This procedure enables laboratories and engineers to prepare material samples-using aggregates up to a maximum particle size of 31.5 mm-at a predetermined density for further mechanical and performance testing. The standard ensures consistency, comparability, and accuracy in the preparation of specimens critical for road construction and other civil engineering applications involving unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures.
Key Topics
Scope of Application
- Suitable for hydraulically bound mixtures, such as soil-cement and hydraulically stabilized road bases
- Applicable to specimens containing aggregates up to 31.5 mm in size
- Uses either Proctor rammer compaction or vibrating table techniques for density control
Essential Equipment
- Proctor moulds and rammers compliant with EN 13286-2
- Vibrating tables specified in EN 13286-5
- Suitable extension collars and surcharge plugs for accurate compaction
Standardized Procedure
- Calculation of the required mass of mixture based on desired specimen size, density, and moisture content
- Layered compaction with controlled application of blows (for rammer) or vibration cycles (for vibrating table)
- Adherence to dimension tolerances for prepared specimens
- Strict temperature and moisture control during specimen curing and storage
Applications
Road Construction Materials Testing
EN 13286-50 is critically used in laboratories and quality assurance for road infrastructure projects. It supports reliable assessment of the physical and mechanical properties-such as compressive and tensile strength-of base and sub-base materials.Soil Stabilization Projects
Engineers use this standard to prepare and test mixtures treated with hydraulic binders (cement, lime, etc.), ensuring their suitability for use in embankments, foundations, or subgrades.Research and Development
The standard method is vital for research into new hydraulically bound materials and mix designs, providing a controlled environment for clear comparison of performance metrics.Compliance and Certification
Testing specimens according to EN 13286-50 forms the basis for compliance documentation and product certification throughout the European construction sector.
Related Standards
For a comprehensive approach to material characterization and testing, refer to related standards in the EN 13286 series, including:
- EN 13286-2: Determination of laboratory reference density and water content (Proctor compaction)
- EN 13286-5: Test method for laboratory reference density and water content (Vibrating table)
- EN 13286-41: Test method for determining compressive strength of hydraulically bound mixtures
- EN 13286-42: Test method for indirect tensile strength determination
- EN 13286-40, EN 13286-43: Methods for tensile strength and modulus of elasticity testing
These standards collectively ensure the quality, safety, and performance of unbound and hydraulically bound mixtures in construction, supporting regulatory and contractual requirements throughout Europe.
Adopting EN 13286-50:2004 provides assurance that laboratory specimen preparation for hydraulically bound mixtures is conducted according to internationally recognized best practices, enabling reliable test results and supporting the durability and performance of major civil engineering works.
